LHC seeks report on nose chopping victim’s condition

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Sayed Zahid Hussain on Friday sought a report on the medical condition of a woman whose former husband chopped off her nose.

Assistant Advocate General Fawad Malik told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that one of the accused, Ghulam Nabi, had been arrested and investigation was under way. The Pakpattan district police officer said that an FIR had also been registered.

The LHC chief justice has sought a medical report of Fatima Bibi on April 17. The chief justice on April 3 took a suo motu notice of the incident reported in a newspaper and sought a comprehensive report from the provincial law officer as to what action had been taken against the accused and what treatment was being given to the victim.

According to the news item, Muhammad Hussain of Pakpattan chopped off the nose of Fatima Bibi. The lady said her brother had given her in marriage to Muhammad Hussain, an old man who forced her to live in sin.

She said she then moved a family court and got divorce from him. She then married Mustafa, the brother-in-law of Muhammad Hussain. She said Muhammad Hussain and some other armed men had entered her house and chopped her nose off with a sharp-edged weapon.

In an earlier report, the LHC registrar wrote that the incident had created sensation, alarm and insecurity among the people. The failure of police to come to the rescue of the victim rendered the incident more atrocious, the report said.
