Legislation on domestic violence soon: minister

LAHORE: PROVINCIAL Minister for Population Welfare, Begum Zakia Shahnawaz has said that legislation on the Bill on domestic violence against women will soon be completed.

She said this while speaking as a chief guest at a Training Workshop on “Sanafi Hassasiat, Budgeting & Leadership, held under the aegis of an NGO at a local hotel here Wednesday.

Begum Zakia Shahnawaz said that the government is giving maximum facilities to the women for bringing them in the national development mainstream and would make legislation for resolution of their problems. She said that being representatives of women in the assembly, it is responsibility of female assembly members to identify the problems being faced by the women besides submitting solid suggestions for their resolution.

She said that women package is an exemplary package which is being implemented and monitored throughout the province. She said that more steps would be taken with consensus for protection of women from the lower level. The minister said that economic independence of women was a dream which has been materialised by the Punjab government through women package.

She said that women cannot get social, economic and legal protection until they play their effective role in the national development. Begum Zakia Shahnawaz said that by giving socio-economic protection to women, the Punjab government has proved that it has resolved problems seriously being faced by them. The other speakers appreciated the efforts of Punjab government for practically implementing women package and emphasised the need for effective implementation of laws.
