LAHORE: Traffic police are once again mobilising to create a sense of security among women driving cars and motorcycles in the city.

Lahore Chief Traffic Police Officer Muntazir Mehdi inaugurated a motorcycle squad to create awareness and a sense of security among women drivers. In the initial phase, a contingent of 25 lady traffic wardens has been formed. The lady wardens will patrol the roads to give women commuters a sense of security.

The official said on the occasion that the lady traffic wardens would also launch awareness campaigns in various educational institutions. Seeing the women personnel patrolling the roads will also encourage women to ride motorcycles.

At present, 141 female officials are serving in the city traffic police. In addition, a separate Ladies Driving School has been set up to build self-confidence among women.

A driving project called Women on Wheels is under way on Ferozepur Road. Thousands of women have been trained to drive motorcycles at the Women on Wheels School. The CTO said the aim of the motorcycle squad was to acknowledge women driver’s capabilities, highlight their importance and strengthen them. A society can only progress if the importance of women is not ignored.

Mehdi said the lady wardens were known for their polite behaviour. They are maintaining the flow of traffic on the roads alongside their male colleagues. Whether it is a mega event, religious festival, celebration, cricket match or road safety issues, the lady wardens are seen serving the citizens.

The official said the lady wardens were fulfilling their responsibilities in the training, ticketing and licensing offices very efficiently. Some of them have been posted at important posts in the city traffic police.
