Killing of Dalbandin girls condemned

KARACHI,March 29,2005;The cold-blooded murder of two real sisters at Dalbandin, Balochistan has been strongly condemned by the Human Rights lawyer Zia Awan. He said that the administration as well as civil society have miserably failed to safeguard the children’s rights.

The lawyer was of the view that Dalbandin killings showed that the children especially female children, were most oppressed and vulnerable section of society against whom, most callous crimes were being carried out.

The lawyer who is also President of a NGO, Lawyers for Human Rights and Legal Aid said that earlier an eight-year-old girl, Anita Mangi was raped near Tando Adam, Sindh and now, the brutal murder and rape of 15 years old Benazir coupled with killing of her sister, 13 years old Safira, were black spots on the face of entire society.

He said that the continuity of these bizarre crimes, was a big question mark over the performance of administration.
Zia Awan said that the violation of childrenÂ’s rights was not a new phenomenon and civil society had been raising voice over these brutalities since a long, but quite alarmingly, the rising trend of these crimes must be a wakeup call for the government as well as whole society.

While quoting the data compiled by the Madadgaar of LHRLA, country’s first helpline for children, he said that according to reports, as many as 4,530 children had been made subjected to crimes like murder, rape, sodomy, torture, injuries, abduction and trafficking in the country during last five years.

He said that the alarming rate of crimes against children could be observed by the fact that 193 children were raped in Year 2000, while the number of rape victim children jumped to 311 in Year 2004.

He said that the number of children killed in Year 2002 stood as 130, while it soared to 766 in Year 2004.He said that despite assurance and announcement made by the govt functionaries, an efficient and proper lawmaking for safeguarding the children’s rights, was still a dream. He deplored that a few laws already enacted in this regard were also not being implemented.

Zia Ahmed demanded of the government that the culprits involved killing of Dalbandin sisters as well as in the rape case of Anita Mangi, should be taken to task and law-enforcing agencies must be sensitised towards children’s rights so the future asset of the nation could be saved from brutal atrocities.
