Khuhro promises jobs for eight women hockey players

KARACHI: Sindh education minister Nisar Khuhro has promised permanent jobs in his department for at least eight girls of the province’s hockey teams taking part in the national women championship, which began at the Hockey Club of Pakistan (HCP) here on Wednesday.

Speaking as the chief guest at the opening ceremony, he said women hockey events would also be organised on regular basis in Sukkur, Larkana and Mirpurkhas where three synthetic turfs have recently been laid.

Khuhro promised that his department would distribute hockey sticks in those schools where girls are interested in the game.

President PHF’s women wing Khushbakht Shujaat said there was need to allocate a sizeable budget for women hockey. She announced holding women hockey championships in Larkana and Sukkur.

Olympian Islahuddin also spoke on the occasion. Olympian Iftikhar Syed and Olympian Samiullah were also present on the occasion. Four matches were played on the first day. Punjab Colours defeated Sindh Colours 3-2 after a nail-biting encounter. Perveen, Mahjabeen and Mahvish Rafiq scored one goal each for the winners. Naintara and Saman Yousuf netted one goal each for Sindh Colours.

Punjab Whites crushed Sindh Whites 4-0. Fozia Bashar, Shamsa Javed, Tahira Akram and Warda Khan scored one goal each.

Experienced WAPDA girls demolished Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa team by netting as many as 20 goals. Forward Nazia Rahmat scored five goals, Sidra Kanwal four and Ishrat Abbas and Maira Sabir netted three each.

Hasina netted the only goal for KP. Army thrashed Balochistan 15-0. Forward Iqra was the top scorer with six goals, while Shamshad and Sahila scored two each.
