Johannesburg, 28-Jan-2026 (PPI): Despite securing a commanding 204-run victory over Zimbabwe and extending their perfect record at the ICC Under-19 Men”s Cricket World Cup, the Indian team remains resolutely focused on its upcoming high-stakes encounter with arch-rivals Pakistan.
India’s fourth consecutive triumph of the tournament further burnished their title credentials, placing them on the cusp of semi-final qualification following earlier wins against the USA, Bangladesh and New Zealand.
The comprehensive performance against the host nation was a significant milestone, marking India”s first victory in the competition not impacted by the DLS method. The team batted its full 50-over allocation for the first time, amassing a blistering 352/8, the fourth-largest total posted at the World Cup so far.
Vihaan Malhotra was the anchor of the Indian innings, earning Player of the Match honours for his superb unbeaten 109 from 107 deliveries. Coming to the crease in the 11th over, Malhotra struck seven fours and guided the team through to the conclusion of their innings.
Captain Ayush Mhatre, who also excelled with the ball, praised the batsman’s crucial contribution. Mhatre noted that Malhotra has been performing admirably and with great self-assurance, both during the tournament and in the tours preceding it, stating that he “is doing good work for the team.”
India’s dominance was equally evident in the field. The bowling attack, led by Mhatre (3/14 from four overs), Udhav Mohan (3/20 from 6.4 overs), and R.S. Ambrish (2/19), made quick work of the Zimbabwean chase, reinforcing the team”s ambition for a deep tournament run.
“This match was really nice for us, the boys were really doing well and we”ll try to carry this momentum forward,” Mhatre added.
While India’s place in the final four may already be confirmed pending the result of England’s match against New Zealand, the team is allowing no room for distraction.
Looking ahead to the fixture against Pakistan, the captain affirmed that his squad is determined to ignore the “outside noise” and maintain a laser focus. “The boys are really excited for the match, we”ll just play our game, not really worry about our opponents that we are playing against, (we”ll) just play our game and back our game,” Mhatre remarked.
