Girls’ high school blown up in Mardan

By: Muhammad Riaz Mayar

MARDAN: The militants blew up a girls’ high school in Katlang Tehsil late Tuesday night, police and locals said.

“The blast, which took place at the Government Girls’ High School near the Ghundo Police Post at 11:30 pm, destroyed seven rooms and the boundary wall,” area resident Ziaullah told The News.

He said the blast shook the entire area and the nearby residence of former MPA Muhammad Iqbal Khan was also partially damaged. It was the second similar incident in Katlang Tehsil as a government primary school in Shamozai village was blown up a month back.

Locals said the school was recently upgraded to a high level but the classes had not yet started. No casualty was reported in the incident, as there was nobody there at the time of the occurrence.

Following the incident, the police launched a search operation in the area but no arrest had been made till the filing of this report. Police registered a first information report (FIR) against unidentified militants.

The sources said that for the last several weeks, militants had stepped up their activities in the district. On November 2, a bomb disposal unit defused a locally-made bomb planted under a bridge in Par Hoti Police Station limits. The same day, the authorities defused another device planted to a telecommunications tower in the limits of City Police Station.
