Girl critical after police torture

RAHIM YAR KHAN: Police during a house raid on Monday night at Chak 114-P picked up an 18-year-old girl after failing to arrest her brother for his involvement in a petty dispute, and subjected her to night-long brutal torture.

According to sources, Naveed, a resident of Chack 114-P had quarreled with some locals over a personal issue a couple of days back.

On Monday evening, a village jury (panchayat) was to decide the dispute. However, before the jury could meet, a team of Airport police station raided Naveed’s house and on failing to arrest him, picked up his 18-year-old sister ‘N’, telling the family the girl would be released only when the accused (her brother) would be produced. The raid was conducted on the complaint of Naveed’s rivals.

According to the victim’s family, the police took ‘N’ to an ‘undisclosed’ place and subjected her to brutal torture to extract information about her brother.

On Tuesday, the relatives of ‘N’ staged a demonstration to protest police’s highhandedness at the DCO Office Chowk.

Following the protest, the Airport police released the girl who had to be immediately shifted to the Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital given her critical condition.
