Ghastly crime: Acid thrower on the run

KARACHI: A woman was injured after her husband threw acid on her in the limits of the Zaman Town police station on Sunday morning. Yaseen, the alleged perpetrator and a suspected drug addict, managed to escape after the incident.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Reema, 30, said her husband was a drug addict and a thief. “He is a jobless person and tortured me regularly,” she said. Neighbours would come to her for compensation after Yaseen would steal things from them, she recalled. “I asked him to leave home. He replied by throwing acid on me and then ran away,” she narrated.

Claiming that she had had enough, Reema said, “I won’t forgive him now,” and vowed to pursue the case in court.

The mother of three girls was referred to the hospital for a medico-legal report by the local police after she approached them for registration of a case.

“It is an acid attack,” confirmed Dr Nisar Ahmed Shah, the medico-legal officer at Civil Hospital, Karachi. He said the victim was referred to the eye ward.

Dr Imdad Ali Shah, incharge of the Burns Centre at Civil hospital, said Reema was not admitted as she did not receive serious injuries and was discharged after treatment. “She received one per cent burns,” he informed.

He said now the eye surgeon will decide how badly the eye was damaged.

According to the neighbours, Yaseen regularly beat up his wife. “Torture was a routine matter,” a neighbourer told The Express Tribune. “He is a drug addict,” she added.

Zaman Town SHO Amin Marri said Reema visited the police station on Monday without a medico-legal report. He said a letter was issued to her to get the medical certificate. “We can’t lodge the FIR without a valid medical report,” he said, adding that the case would be registered according to the report.

Marri said the husband managed to escape after the incident and will be arrested as soon as a case is registered against him.
