Gang-rape suspects remanded

By Ishaq Tanoli

KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Tuesday remanded two suspects in police custody in the rape case of a schoolteacher.

Police produced the suspects before the court of a judicial magistrate (south) and sought their remand. The magistrate handed over the suspects to police on physical remand till July 1 and directed the investigation officer to produce them in court on next hearing.

According to the prosecution, the 46-year-old teacher residing alone in a house in PECHS had called a sweeper, who works in her school, for some cleaning work. The sweeper turned up along with an accomplice on June 26.

They used a kitchen knife to overpower the woman and subjected her to sexual assault.

They also robbed the victim of her mobile phone and valuables. Both the suspects were attempting to flee when they were captured by neighbours, the prosecution said.

A case (FIR No 187/11) was registered against the suspects under Sections 376 (punishment for rape), 392 (punishment for robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint of the victim at the Tipu Sultan police station.
