Gang-rape suspect who fled the country six years ago arrested upon arrival

The Punjab Police on Sunday apprehended a man who had fled the country after his alleged involvement in the gang-rape of a female college student six years ago.

Police took the suspect into custody from Allama Iqbal International Airport upon his return from Yemen, Express News reported.

According to the law enforcement agency, the man, identified as Shajar Hussain, has been handed over to the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), Gujranwala.

Authorities also said they had earlier contacted the Interpol to get hold of the fleeing suspect and bring him to justice.

Official told the media that the man had been declared a proclaimed offender after multiple attempts by police to nab him.

Detailing the incident further, they said the man had allegedly committed the heinous act six years ago within the precincts of Ladhewala Warraich police station in Gujranwala.

Last month, two Punjab University students were booked for attempting sexual assault and making a video of the incident after stripping and blackmailing their classmate.

The suspects, identified as Awais and Andleeb, allegedly abducted a girl from Campus Bridge near the university, the victim’s brother Z* said.

He added that as the suspects started to blackmail her sister, she shared the ordeal with the family.

On her brother’s complaint, Muslim Town police registered a case against the suspects under sections 511 (attempt to sexual assault), 376 (rape), 365 (abduction) and other offences as mentioned in Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
