Enforcement of women’s property rights to help resolve decades-old cases, says Nabila Hakim

Lahore    –  Punjab Ombudsperson Nabila Hakim Ali Khan Friday visited the head office of Nawa-i-Waqt Group and met Managing Director Rameeza Majid Nizami.

During the meeting, issues relating to the harassment of women and their inheritance rights were discussed in detail. They also discussed solution to the problems faced by women.

Nabila Hakim Ali Khan said that the government had enacted a law — “Punjab Enforcement of Women’s Property Rights Act 2021” — the current year for timely provision of women’s inheritance rights. “The verdict has been pronounced after which the right is conveyed by the deputy commissioner and police of the district concerned,” she said. “Cases have been settled in our office, and before the verdict, the brothers have given the right to their sisters,” she added.

Nabila Hakim Ali Khan said that cases in the civil courts were kept pending for decades, adding: “In order to find a solution to this problem, the government has given the power to give inheritance rights to women to the Ombudsperson of Punjab.”

She also mentioned the issues relating to her office, team members and their hard work day and night. Rameeza Majid Nizami, Managing Director (MD) Nawa-i-Waqt Group, appreciated the government’s assignment of powers to the Punjab Ombudsperson for immediate resolution of women’s fundamental issues through legislation. She said that the provision of inheritance rights to women and timely provision of justice to women in harassment cases by the Ombudsperson of Punjab was a commendable initiative. “Our society is in dire need of such measures,” she added.

On the occasion, Nabila Hakim Ali Khan said that Nawa-i-Waqt Group had always played an effective role with regard to women empowerment, to which MD Rameeza Majid Nizami said that Nawa-i-Waqt Group was always there to strengthen women and provide timely relief to them.

Punjab Ombudsperson Consultant Abdur Rashid and In-charge Property Section Hafiz Farooq Anwar were also present on the occasion.
