Court seeks ministry’s comments in Aafia case

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Mohammad Bilal Khan asked the ministry of foreign affairs on Wednesday to submit its comments about developments in the case of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

The comments were sought after Aafia’s mother and Iftikhar Hussain Rajpoot jointly filed a review petition seeking the court’s order to bring her back to the country from the United States.

Citing former president Pervez Musharraf, former prime minister Shaukat Aziz and interior secretary Syed Kamal Shah as respondents, the petitioners said that since 1998, the Pakistan government had handed over more than 9,000 citizens to the US, including Aimal Kansi. They alleged that Kamal Shah, who was Inspector General of Police in Sindh, was indirectly involved in the abduction of Dr Aafia.

They prayed to the court to direct the government to bring Dr Aafia back to the country.
