Capital City Police Officer says police registered 1059 cases of sexual harassment this year

LAHORE – Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Mehmood Dogar Thursday said that the police registered 1059 cases of sexual harassment and violence against women during the ongoing year, adding that 400 first information reports (FIRs) were lodged only in the month of August.

He was responding to questions raised by students of different universities and colleges during an interactive and awareness raising session held here on Thursday in collaboration with the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU).

He said that the police had engaged all segments of society to develop, evaluate, and implement comprehensive approaches to prevent sexual harassment against women and girls at public places.

LCWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Bushra Mirza, Directors Students Affairs, teachers and students from different colleges and universities participated in the session.

Students demanded an increase in the number of policewomen, especially at police stations, so that female victims could directly approach them for solution to their problems.

“Emergency helpline 15, Women Safety App, CCPO office helpline 1242, and Anti-Women Harassment and Violence Cells are the first responders to gender based crimes,” the CCPO said and added that those steps were playing pivotal role in resolving grievances of the victims.
