Call for strategy to check violence against women

PESHAWAR: Speakers at a seminar on Friday asked the policy-making institutions and political circles for preparing strategy to control violence against women.

The seminar was part of the 16-day joint awareness campaign of Peace and Development Organisation (Pado) and UNFEM in Union Council Karnal Sher Khan, District Swabi. A large number of students, youth, religious scholars, elders, union council Nazims attended the seminar.

Besides, the Pado officials, prominent religious scholar Hussain Ahmad. They demanded of the policy-makers and political leaders to prepare strategies for the arrest of violence against women to implement the United Nations convention on elimination of discrimination against women (CEDAW) and to improve the situation of women’s living environment in the country.

Addressing the seminar, Pado Chief Executive Officer Furqanullah said that violence against women was tantamount to the violation of the rights of women, and urged the youth to come forward for the elimination of this un-Islamic act.

He condemned domestic torture of women, and said that Islam had granted respect and prestige to them, saying that the treatment meted out to women was against the spirit of Islamic education. He said that domestic violence against women resulted in the increase of fears and harassment, which had no justification in Islam. He said this unequal treatment also left negative impact on the children, whose control was inevitable.
