Acid victim being denied proper treatment

VEHARI, June 28: A woman on whose body her husband threw acid allegedly over domestic issues on Friday is undergoing ordinary treatment at Burewala’s THQ Hospital as the hospital does not have any burns unit.

Though the doctors had referred her to Nishtar Hospital in Multan on Friday but her family refused to take her to that hospital and she is still at the intensive care unit of THQ Hospital with 50 to 60 per cent of her body burnt.

THQ Hospital Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Amjad told Dawn on Saturday that 35-year-old Sumera’s one eye had lost eyesight while her face, chest and legs had been burnt severely.

The MS said that after the refusal of the victim’s family to shift her to Multan, the local surgeon and eye specialist were treating her. Dr Amjad expressed the hope that she might recover in next four to five weeks.

The victim’s father, Khushi Muhammad, told reporters that his son-in-law Saeed had been forcing Sumera to prostitution and on her refusal he threw acid on her.

He claimed that Saeed was an addict and used to quarrel with Sumera on minor issue. He said that Sumera had abandoned Saeed but returned to him after reconciliation just two months. He said that Saeed did not change his attitude and used to torture her on her refusal to pay money for his drugs. The City police was yet to arrest the accused till the filing of this report.
