68 women among 166 people who committed suicide in one month: HRCP
MIRPURKHAS: The number of people, who committed suicide in the country during the last one month was 166, which included 68 women. These cases were reported during August 24 and September 26.
According to a report of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), majority of the victims ended their lives due to petty family disputes and poverty. Forty-one of these cases were reported from Sindh province alone. Another 117 people attempted suicide during the said period but timely medical treatment saved their lives.
According to the HRCP report a total of 283 suicide and attempt to suicide cases were reported, but the FIRs of only 41 cases were registered by the police. The report further said that 36 people, including 26 women, were brutally murdered in the name of honour across the country.
