Women police fight harassment

LAHORE: City Traffic Police Lahore (CTPL) deployed a squad consisting of female traffic wardens to patrol the streets and control harassment on New Year’s Eve. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ammara Athar said that the squad would perform duties on main roads and across the city until late at night.

The squad was tasked with controlling eve teasing during New Year’s Eve and patrolled Mall road, Jail Road, Main Boulevard Gulberg and other important points. Meanwhile, Dolphin Squad also a special squad also to ensure law and order and prevent aerial firing and one-wheeling in the city on New Year’s Eve. The squad consisted of 220 teams patrolling areas where one-wheeling and aerial firing are most common, including Walton, Defence, Jail Road, Qurtaba Chowk, Mall Road, Chungi Amar Sadhu, Karim Block, Thokar and other points. These patrols were carried out in coordination with police response unit. The teams also manned pickets with local police across the provincial metropolis.

Woman killed in Chakwal village

CHAKWAL: A 40-year-old woman was gunned down while a man was injured in Kallu village in the limits of Kallar police station on Sunday.

According to police, the woman was living along with her in-laws.

“Her husband was abroad and she allegedly had an extra-marital relation with one of her cousins,” a police official said.

On Sunday her cousin came to meet her and in the meantime, her two brothers-in-law and father-in-law also arrived. One of the accused opened fire on her and her cousin. “The woman died on the spot while the man was seriously injured,” the police official said.

The father of the injured man called the police and informed them that his son had been murdered.

However he was rushed to Kallar Kahar hospital from where the doctors referred him to Rawalpindi where he is still in critical condition.

“He was shot in the neck,” the police official said.

The body of the woman was taken to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital for autopsy and was later laid to rest in the evening. The deceased had three children.

“We have registered a case against the three accused who would be arrested soon,” a police official said.

522 women, underage girls sexually assaulted in Karachi last year

KARACHI: More than 500 women and underage girls were sexually assaulted in Karachi alone during the year 2023 which also saw 4,042 cases of physical assault on them, the police surgeon said.

Separately, the Edhi Foundation said that as many as 714 people were shot dead and 3,022 suffered bullet wounds during the year 2023 in Karachi, registering a 15 per cent increase in violent deaths compared to 2022.

A spokesperson for the charity told Dawn on Sunday that the data was based on the figures of those killed or wounded across the city and reported at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) during the past year.

Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed — who heads the team of medico-legal officers deputed in the city’s three major hospitals — also said that as many as 1,565 bodies were brought to the three hospitals for a post-mortem examination. Those died included murder victims, traffic accidents, suicides, etc

714 persons shot dead, 223 bodies of newborns recovered in 2023, says Edhi Foundation

According to the Edhi Foundation’s data, 248 persons died due to torture while 23 were killed in cylinder/gas explosions and other incidents.

The record showed at least 180 men and women committed suicide. Thirteen persons were killed by trains and 23 people burned to death in different accidents.

The number of people died of electrocution was 119. As many as 191 people drowned in different incidents in the city during 2023.

The Edhi spokesperson said that 750 people were killed in road traffic accidents and 11,728 suffered injuries. He said that 63pc of those killed and injured in traffic accidents were motorcyclists.

The data compiled by the Edhi Foundation also said that 224 cases of infanticide were reported across the city during the year 2023.

In a statement, Faisal Edhi expressed his disappointment over the cases of infanticide but claimed that a ‘significant reduction’ in the recovery of bodies of newborn babies was witnesses in the outgoing year.

522 women sexually assaulted

Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed told Dawn 522 women and young girls were sexually assaulted during 2023.

She said that 4,042 cases of physical assault on women were reported in the outgoing year.

She said that 22 bodies were exhumed on the orders of judicial magistrates / courts during the year 2023.

Meanwhile, a police spokesperson said that till Dec 29, 3,158 encounters took place across Sindh in which 21 policemen were martyred while 1,726 criminal gangs were eliminated.

He also said that 188 encounters took place with dacoits in katcha areas (riverine) in which 40 bandits were killed while 136 others were arrested.

According to Sindh Rangers, they had conducted 163 operations against terrorists, targeted killers, kidnappers and extortionists along with the police and arrested 197 high-profile suspects who were members of different banned religious/sectarian, sub-nationalists and gangs.

The rangers also said because of their actions against water theft, around 25 MGD (million gallons daily) of water was saved, which resulted in the increase of revenue generation for the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board up to Rs200m monthly.

Fifth women police station inaugurated in Balochistan

QUETTA: In a move to empower women within the police force in Balochistan, a women police station has been inaugurated in Sibi town.

The initiative aims to provide female complainants with the opportunity to address their issues with women police officials. The establishment of the women’s police station in Sibi marks the fifth of its kind in Balochistan.

Previously, women police stations were set up in Quetta, Gwadar, Turbat and Sohbatpur.

IGP Balochistan Abdul Khaliq Sheikh emphasised the importance of increasing the representation of women in the police force and the establishment of more women police stations in the province. He highlighted that beyond the numerical aspect empowering women within the force is crucial.

Project launched to help women cotton pickers earn money in off-season

Hyderabad: The Sindh Community Foundation (SCF), considering the socio-economic vulnerability and climate change impacts on the lives of people and livelihoods, has launched a literacy and offseason poverty reduction programme for women cotton workers with the support of the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network.

SCF Executive Director Javed Hussain said the women cotton workers played pivotal roles for the textile industry but they faced poor working and socio-economic conditions.

He highlighted that these cotton workers were lacking in literacy, which also resulted in their exploitation. He said only 10 per cent of female cotton workers received primary education.

The SCF has launched the literacy programme for female cotton workers of 30 villages of Matiari district for the next two years. In the first year, 15 literacy centers called Suhaee Centre (Suhaee in Sindhi means light) have been launched in 15 villages of the district where 525 women cotton workers would gain basic literacy through attending classes of the informal education module.

The SCF head said that cotton picking was a seasonable job of four to six months mainly carried by women workers. He added that those workers suffered poverty in the off-season.

He said the women in those centres would also get income generation training and seed support to initiate small-level income generation activities.

The training would include how to run small businesses like milk production and home-based agro-food security solutions.

The off-season income generation skills training would enable women cotton pickers to be involved in economic activities for a decent livelihood even in off-seasons, Hussain said, adding that the project would also raise awareness among those workers regarding occupational safety, decent working conditions, and climate change adaptation.
