Brutal torture of two women ‘by rivals in land dispute’ in Umerkot village

Two of the eight suspects nominated in an FIR pertaining to the brutal torture of two women were arrested by the Dhoronaro police on Saturday.

A video that went viral on the social media showed the eight suspects subjecting the two women, Najma Nohari, wife of Ibrahim Nohari, and Latifa Nohari, wife of Mumtaz Nohari, to severe beating and the women crying foul. It showed that the suspects dragged the screaming victims into the nearby jungle area by pulling them from hair before beating them up until the victims fainted.

Area residents said that the victims’ families had a dispute over a piece of land in Khunhar village near Dhoronaro with those of the suspects. Both sides belonged to the Nohari community. They confirmed that the incident of torture took place on Friday (Feb 10).

As soon as the video went viral on the social media, adviser to the chief minister on human rights Surrender Valasai and Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah took notice of the incident and ordered arrest of the culprits.

Accordingly, an FIR against the eight men was registered at the Dhoronaro police station and two of the suspects, Sobdar Nohari and Khamiso Nohri, were arrested.

The Umerkot SSP ordered an inquiry into the whole episode after which DSP Iqbal Mangrio along with a police team proceeded to the village to make arrests.

Karachi woman held for killing domestic help remanded in police custody

A judicial magistrate on Saturday remanded in police custody a woman arrested for her alleged involvement in the death of her 11-year-old domestic help and wounding his brothers.

Police claimed to have arrested Shirin Asad and booked her for allegedly killing teenager Rafique and causing injuries to his three elder brothers, who worked at her house in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, on Feb 8.

On Saturday, the investigating officer produced the suspect before the judicial magistrate (East) to seek her physical remand in police custody for interrogation and investigation.

The IO submitted that according to the complainant, Maqbool Manthar Ali, the suspect used to beat her sons. He further submitted that she allegedly used to burn the victim with heated tongs and had pulled his nails with pliers.

He added that the suspect had also wounded the older boy, Mitha Khan. He pleaded for a 14-day remand in police custody for questioning and collecting evidence to complete the investigation and other legal formalities.

However, the magistrate remanded the suspect in police custody for five days, directing the IO to produce her on the next date along with an investigation report.

A case was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 324 (attempted murder), 334 (punishing for destroying limbs), and 337-A (i) (punishment for causing injuries) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2018 at the Gulshan-i-Iqbal police station on the complaint of the victim’s father.

According to the FIR, the complainant’s three sons had been working at the woman’s house for the past many years.

It added that they were being paid Rs15,000 a month, which was being transferred to the complainant in district Tharparkar.

MK Bhatti’s wife moves court against ‘police harassment’

Wife of Punjab Assembly Secretary Muhammad Khan Bhatti, who was arrested from Sindh, has moved a Lahore sessions court, seeking its intervention against the alleged harassment from police.

According to details, Advocate Sarmad Ghani filed the petition in the court of Additional Sessions, Judge Hasnain Raza, on behalf of Punjab Assembly Secretary’s wife.

In the petition, Muhammad Khan Bhatti’s spouse claimed that over 20 people in police uniform broke into her house on the night of February 6. “The police officials stole valuable items and harassed the women,” the petition stated.

Meanwhile, the session court issued notices to Capital City Police (CCPO) Lahore and SHO Race Course Police Station and sought a reply on February 17.

It is pertinent to mention here that Punjab Assembly Secretary Muhammad Khan Bhatti was arrested from Sindh’s Matiari area. Later, his house in Gujranwala was also raided and a domestic employee was arrested.

Sources told media that he was apprehended under the supervision of the Hyderabad police SSP from Matiari. Bhatti was traveling to the Sindh High Court (SHC) to seek protective and pre-arrest bail, they added.

Earlier, it was reported that Punjab police raided the residence of the former chief minister and Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in Gujrat.

Uniformed and plainclothed police officials entered Pervaiz Elahi’s residence and started searching the entire house.

According to the reports, Pervaiz Elahi’s family was not present in the house at the time of the raid except for the gatekeeper and domestic workers.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science observed

International Day of Women and Girls in Science marked on Feb 11 (Saturday) across the globe including Pakistan aiming to ensure full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.

According to a UN study from 14 countries, the probability for female students graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in science is 18 percent, while the male equivalent is 37 percent.

The resolution states that women continue to be excluded from participating fully in the economy even though representing half of the world’s population and that women have a vital role to play and a right to participate in sustainable development policies, programs, and decision-making at all levels.Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is a term that is often used when referring to the academic disciplines of science. STEM education starts with young pupils in a blended learning environment, and the curriculum shows students how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. It is often aimed to attract women and girls.

Three Girls among Five Abducted From Faisalabad

As many as five people including three girls were abducted from different parts of Faisalabad during past 12 hours.

Police spokesman said here on Saturday that Sughran wife of Ahmad Raza was abducted from Chak No.

249-RB along with her daughter Iram, whereas 15-year-old Amina Mansoor was kidnapped from Railway Station.

Similarly, 32-year-old Irfan was abducted from Bhaiwala, whereas 2-year-old Almas was kindapped from Muslim Park Jaranwala Road and 7-year-old Gulfam from Chak No.596-GB.

The police registered separate cases and started investigation for safe recovery of the abductees, he added.
