Challenged woman ‘burnt alive’

SAHIWAL: A disabled woman was burned alive at her home in Farid Ganj late on Sunday. A bullet wound in her head was also found, according to city police, but only a postmortem examination would reveal if Anwar Bibi was shot before or after she was burned.

The police declared it a targeted killing, but the motive has yet to be determined. On the complaint of her brother Muhammad Riaz, police launched a murder investigation against unknown individuals.

When neighbours discovered the house on fire and called Rescue 1122; the woman with hearing and speech impairments was alone at home. The body was taken to the Sahiwal Teaching Hospital for an autopsy by police.

Faryal highlights PPP’s role for women’s rights

KARACHI: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had always stood for the women’s rights and their empowerment in Pakistan, said PPP women wing president Faryal Talpur.

She was speaking as the chief guest at a social protection convention arranged by Pakistan Baitul Mal (PBM) at the Arts Council of Pakistan here on Monday.

A total of 100 families of orphan girls were presented with payments through a newly launched Orphans and Widows Supporting Programme (OWSP) on the occasion.

On the occasion, Ms Talpur counted many firsts of women-led initiatives by the PPP, from the First Women Bank and Women police station to the Lady Health Workers Programme, which started during the first and second tenures of late former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, and successfully continued and mainstreamed in Pakistan.

“The most recent initiative on empowering women economically by the Sindh government was the handing over of 25 acres of land to the landless women farmers in Sindh,” she said.

Recalling another women’s empowerment initiative named ‘Women on Wheels’ launched from the same venue by her in Karachi, she said that another women-centered and women-led initiative ‘Pink Taxis’ by the Sindh government was also being launched soon in Karachi, which would then be taken to other parts of the province, too. On the occasion, Ms Talpur also distributed sewing machines among widows from the PBM.

PBM managing director Aamir Fida Paracha said the OWSP had been launched for widows to support their daughters with a stipend of Rs8,000 for one girl and Rs12,000 for two girls to help them continue their education.

PPP Senator Waqar Mehdi, MNA Shahida Rehmani, Provincial Minister for Labour Saeed Ghani, and MPAs Sohail Anwar Siyal, Qasim Siraj Soomro and Sadia Javed also attended the convention along with a large number of the PBM beneficiaries, their families, and social protection and civil society activists.

Man Arrested For Wife’s Murder In Burewala

A man was arrested on Monday for being behind the murder of his wife, who was allegedly shot dead near village 201/EB in the jurisdiction of Gagu Mandi police station, just two months after her marriage.

According to police spokesman, Asmat Bibi resident of Arifwala got married with her relative Sarfraz about two months ago. She, along with her husband, was going on motorcycle to meet her sister when another motorcyclist shot her dead and escaped.

The Gagu Mandi police started investigations into the incident and arrested her husband, Sarfraz.

During the interrogation, he confessed that he was not happy with his marriage, and wanted to get married to another girl. He made a plan with his friend Qurban Ali, who on his (Sarfraz) behest shot Asmat dead.

Further investigations were underway from the accused arrested. The accused, Qurban Ali has also been arrested, the police spokesman added.

Empowering women, providing them equal rights manifesto of PPP: Turi

Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Sajid Hussain Turi has said that the preamble of the constitution of Pakistan supports democratic principles and guarantees equal rights of all citizens as gender equality is a central component to development.

He said that empowering women and providing them with equal rights and opportunities is the manifesto of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) which we are implementing under the visionary leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

He said this while addressing the toolkit and certificate awarding ceremony to women graduates in Peshawar on Monday, in which he distributed certificates and toolkits to women who successfully completed vocational training. The 45-day training was organized in collaboration with Overseas Pakistanis Foundation and GIZ. Senator Rubina Khalid and other political and social personalities also participated in the certificate distribution ceremony and addressed the ceremony. He appreciated the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and GIZ for conducting employable skill training for women.

Addressing the event, Federal Minister Sajid Hussain Turi said that he was happy to see that in less than two months, dozens of women were trained and provided with toolkits to lead a professional life and economically independent. He said that Pakistan People’s Party firmly believes in gender equality which can only be achieved if women and men are given equal opportunities, rights and responsibilities in all spheres of life. Sajid Turi further said that Shaheed Ms. Benazir Bhutto is the first woman Prime Minister of the world of Islam who is a role model for all women of Pakistan.

The Federal Minister said that the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development will extend the training sessions and programs to all provinces and districts of Pakistan with the support of GIZ, Provincial TEVTA and NAVTTC.
