Women’s role vital for growth

LAHORE: At an awareness session “Facilitation provided to the business community by government departments” the participants agreed that growth is not possible without the participation of women in the economic activities.

The session held at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry was presided by LCCI President Kashif Anwar while Punjab Commission on Status of Women Secretary Nida Azher, Regional Business Head, First Women Bank Mubeena Tariq, Senior Officer State Bank of Pakistan Fareeha Tehreem, Higher Education Commission Punjab Chairman Professor Dr Shahid Muneer, Punjab Small Industries Corporation MD Asif Ali Farrukh, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan Deputy Director Mariam Alvi, Lahore College for Women University VC Professor Dr Bushra Mirza and others spoke on the occasion All speakers agreed that women that make up more than half of Pakistan’s population, must be facilitated to contribute to the growth of the country. To achieve gender parity in the country, women’s role should be expanded, a supportive environment should be created, starting a business should be made simple, and availability of loans should be made easy for them. PHEC Chairmen Dr Shahid Muneer said that the enrolment of women in the universities was increasing, the day is near when women will surpass men in educational institutions. Out of 200 Pakistan top universities, 42 are being headed by a women compared to India where no women is the vice-chancellor of any university.

Deputy Director TDAP informed that the authority is working to extend more services for the SMEs and entrepreneurs belonging to non-traditional sectors particularly women to participate in the international exhibitions. SMEDA representative said most of the women that operate the small and medium enterprises need handholding provision of finance and marketing. He said authority is encouraging SMEs for exports and that includes women entrepreneurs as well. Regional Business Head, First Women Bank said the bank is working for the women of rural areas to impart training and skills.

Molecular biology: Punjab University Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB) organised an international conference on “Plant Molecular Biology (ICPMP) 2022” here on Wednesday. On this occasion, Rector Imperial College of Business Studies, Lahore Tahira Aziz Mughal, CEMB Director Prof Dr Kausar Malik, ex-directors of CEMB, including Dr Tayyab Husnain and Dr Ahmad Ali Shahid.

Man who killed wife arrested in Karachi

GUJRANWALA: Local police claim to have arrested a man from Karachi, who had fled away after killing his wife and hiding her body in his house in Gujranwala. According to police, suspect Nehal alias Babar, a resident of Baghbanpura, murdered his wife, Ishrat Bibi, over some domestic issue on Nov 23.

The police say the suspect hid his wife’s body under a pile of clothes, left his children at the house of their maternal uncle and fled to Karachi.

After the murder was revealed, Gujranwala City Police Officer Umar Salamat, constituted a team headed by Baghbanpura SHO Zubair Ahmed that went to Karachi and arrested the suspect using modern technology.

The police say the suspect claimed that he planned the murder of his wife after watching some popular crime investigation serials aired by an Indian TV channel.

A member of the police team that arrested Nehal says the suspect was planning to escape from Karachi on a fishing trawler that would have returned after 45 days. However, timely action by police resulted in his arrest.

Further investigation is going on, say police.

Three held for gang rape of teenage girl in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA)

KARACHI: Police claimed to have arrested three men for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a teenage girl at a desolate place in Defence Housing Authority on Wednesday.

South-SSP Syed Asad Raza said that the girl was taken to a hospital, where a medico-legal officer carried out her initial examination and confirmed that she was subjected to a criminal assault.

He said that a police patrol caught the suspects red-handed at a desolate place in Phase VIII on Khayaban-i-Iqbal.

The Sahil police registered a case against the suspects on behalf of the state under Sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Complainant Assistant Sub-Inspector Rais Abbasi stated in the FIR that he along with other policemen was patrolling in the Seaview area as per routine. When they reached close to Khayaban-i-Iqbal at about 5am, they saw a car parked on the road and heard a girl’s screams.

He said that the policemen reached the scene and found three men and the girl who was in semi-conscious state.

He said he informed the high-ups and called a female police officer and took into custody the three suspects.

The female police officer arrived and talked with the girl and took her into protective custody.

During initial interrogations, the suspects told the police that they brought / kidnapped the girl, aged around 18-19 years, from Nazimabad and gave her sedatives and subjected her to a criminal assault.

The suspects failed to prove the ownership of the vehicle when investigators asked them about the documents of the car.

Man gets death, fine for killing three minor daughters

MIANWALI: A district and sessions court on Wednesday handed down death sentence on three counts along with Rs1.5 million fine to a man for killing his three minor daughters.

On May 2, 2021, Nadir Khan shot dead his three daughters – Irfa Fatima (4), Alisha Fatima (3) and one-and-a-half-year old Ayesha. The Daudkhel police had registered a case under sections 302/324 of Pakistan Penal Code against Nadir on the complaint of the maternal grandfather of the girls.

Reports said the convict was reportedly enraged over the successive births of daughters after his marriage and often used to fight with his wife.

According to the investigators, the convict, a factory worker, was an addict and would off and on threaten his wife that he would kill the girls.
