Woman who had set herself on fire in police station dies

BAHAWALPUR: A woman who had attempted suicide by setting herself on fire inside Ahmedpur East police station on Oct 3 in protest against non-registration of her rape complaint, succumbed to her burns at the Bahawal Victoria Hospital here on Tuesday.

Shehnaz Bibi, a resident of Shaukat Colony in Uch Sharif, had visited the Uch police station to file a complaint against some gangsters who had allegedly forced their entry into her house, subjected her to rape and abducted her minor daughter.

When Uch police did not entertain her complaint, she went to Ahmedpur East police station where she dowsed herself in petrol and set herself on fire in protest against police.

However, policemen and others present there extinguished the fire and shifted the woman to hospital.

Bahawalpur district police spokesperson had claimed that the alleged rape was committed last month and the woman’s complaint was duly registered.

He said the police also booked Shehnaz for attempting suicide.Police claim that District Police Officer Aibadat Nisar suspended four police officials, including an inspector, for their alleged negligence in the case.

Two Mepco officers punished for sexual harassment

LAHORE: The Federal Ombudsman Secretariat for Protection against Harassment of Women (Fospah) found two gazzetted officers of the Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) guilty of sexual harassment of a woman employee.

Mepco Assistant Director Khizar Hayat, a BPS-17 officer, was dismissed from service and an Rs500, 000 fine was imposed on him to be paid as compensation to the complainant while Mepco Director (Admin) Mian Sohail Afzal, a BPS-19 officer, was demoted and a fine of Rs1m was imposed on him for hacking the woman’s mobile phone to blackmail her.

Mepco Headquarters Commercial Assistant Hafsa Tariq had filed a complaint for action against Mepco employees, including Hayat, Afzal, Deputy Director Sohail Abbas and Director Jamshed Niazi, for sexually harassing her at workplace. She sought action under Section 8 of the Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010.

Fine imposed on the guilty to be paid to complainant

She said Afzal and Hayat had deceitfully accessed her mobile phone, retrieved her personal chat and photos and blackmailed her. Besides, they shared the chat and photos with other employees of the company as well as on social media networks. She said she had been using her number since 2014 and WhatsApp as well. On April 1, 2019, she added, a news article was published [in an Urdu newspaper] with a screenshot of her WhatsApp conversation after which she realised that data of her phone had been hacked. She stated that Khizar Hayat, at the behest of Sohail Afzal, had asked for her mobile phone to make a call and hacked her data.

On Oct 7, Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Kashmala Tariq announced the verdict, available with Dawn, stating that Hayat was found guilty of harassment and his act fell within the definition of Section 2(h) of the Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010. Hayat was dismissed from service and fined.

According to the verdict, there was evidence showing Sohal Afzal also guilty of sexual harassment. He was imposed a punishment of lowering his post or time-scale with Rs1m fine to be paid as compensation to the complainant.

The competent authority shall impose the penalty upon both the guilty officers within one week of the receipt of the order under intimation to the registrar Fospah.

The other accused, Sohail Abbas and Jamshed Niazi, were exonerated of the charges as cogent evidence or substance existed against them.

Three women killed

Rawalpindi-Three women were killed in two separate incidents of firing in the district here on Tuesday, informed sources.

Police registered two separate cases against the killers besides arresting a suspect, they said.

Inspector General of Police Punjab Faisal Shahkar and CPO Syed Nadim Shehzad Bukhari also took notice of brutal murder of three women and directed the subordinates to apprehend the killers.

According to sources, two women were murdered in an armed attack launched by four suspects when the duo was working in a field in Arazi Village of Gujar Khan. After committing crime, the attackers managed to escape from the scene, whereas, heavy contingent of police rushed to the crime scene and cordoned off the area.

After collection of evidence by forensic experts and investigators of Homicide Investigation Unit from crime scene, the bodies were moved to hospital for autopsy where the deceased were identified as Sadia (30) and Asmat (25), sources said. The investigators, led by SP Saddar Division Ahmed Zunair Cheema, also recorded the statement of eyewitnesses on the occasion. “Officials of police station Gujar Khan received a complaint by the heirs of the deceased who accused Naseer, Idrees, Sughra and an unknown man of killing two women,” according to a police spokesman.

He also said that IG Punjab Faisal Shahkar also took notice of double murder case and directed the Rawalpindi police senior officers to arrest the fleeing killers.

He said IG also sought a detailed report from Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rawalpindi Region Imran Ahmer in this regard.

“All the supervisory officers should keep in touch with the victim family and efforts should be made to handcuff the killers,” he said. Meanwhile, another woman was killed in Nishter Colony, the limits of police station Sadiqabad, according to a police spokesman. He said that the body of woman was thrown at some distance from her house which was later recovered by the police. The body was moved to hospital for autopsy by the investigators where she was identified as Anam, he said.

He said that the police, following orders of CPO Syed Shehzad Nadim Bukhari, has arrested the suspected killer of Anam. He said the investigators of HIU of PS Sadiqabad are interrogating the case from all the angles.

Man kills 5 over domestic issue

Mardan – A man allegedly shot dead his five family members including his son, daughter- in-law, granddaughter, and two grandsons over a domestic issue in the Gujarat area in the limits of Police Station Chura, as informed by police, rescue 1122 and local sources on Tuesday. The sources said that the killer Usman Ghani started indiscriminate firing over a domestic issue inside his house and killed his 29-year-old son Farhan, his 25 years old daughterin- law, his 12 and 7 years old grandsons Afzal and Rohial and his 6-year-old granddaughter Alina died on the spot. Rescue 1122 shifted the dead bodies to Tehsil Hospital. However, the police haven’t registered the First Information Report (FIR) till filing this report.
