Woman commits suicide in Okara after ‘relatives’ share doctored images

LAHORE: After awaiting action against those who had uploaded and shared her doctored images on social media and WhatsApp, a woman in Depalpur town of Okara district reportedly ended her life on Sunday.

The suspects, who were allegedly close relatives of the victim, had edited her pictures to show her in a compromising position. Later, those pictures were uploaded to social media and sent to her neighbours and relatives on WhatsApp.

In her complaint with the cybercrime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on July 18, she had named all the suspects, saying that their action had made her life ‘almost hell’ and endangered her family.

Talking about the incident, an official told Dawn that before uploading the pictures, the suspects had allegedly assaulted the victim’s seven-year-old daughter physically and fractured her arms.

After the pictures were shared, the elders of the family on both sides tried to resolve the matter instead of reporting it to police and ordered the attackers to pay for the child’s treatment as compensation.

However, the suspects violated the agreement and delayed the payment of compensation money.

Following days of requests to take action against the culprits, the woman, a mother of four, took her own life by swallowing poison, said the victim’s family.

They complained that the FIA had sufficient time to proceed against the culprits, but the inordinate delay and procedural requirements led to her death.

Since the pictures went viral, the victim was under immense pain and agony, watching her daughter crying inconsolably and facing harsh questions from her husband and close relatives, the family added.

Meanwhile, Okara DPO Furqan Bilal told Dawn that police had arrested three suspects nominated by the victim in her complaint with the FIA and raids were being conducted to arrest the others.

He said the suspects included the victim’s relatives Taimur, Zeeshan and a woman Fatima.

According to the complaint filed with the FIA, a copy of which is available with Dawn, the victim said the culprits had taken her pictures and edited her face over a naked body. Then, those pictures were sent on WhatsApp to her neighbours and relatives.

“The suspect Fatima recorded a voice message and shared it along with my edited pictures, asking my relatives to share them further,” she claimed in her complaint.

Although the FIA had assigned a woman inspector from Lahore to investigate the case, the victim’s family said the agency did nothing to protect the complainant and the culprits continued to blackmail her.

Sarfraz Khan Virk, Additional Director of FIA for Cybercrime in Punjab, told Dawn a lady inspector had called the suspect for interrogation in the first week of September, but the complainant told the authority to close the matter as it had been resolved by the family’s elders.

Later, the complainant again visited the FIA Lahore’s office and asked officials to initiate proceedings as the elders couldn’t decide her case.

“As we started proceedings, we couldn’t get evidence of direct involvement of the suspected woman,” Mr Virk said, adding that he had also sought the custody of another suspect and ordered forensic analysis of his mobile phone.

To a question, Mr Virk said during the investigation it was confirmed that the suspects deliberately edited the victim’s pictures to show her a woman of bad character.

He added that the investigation was going on when he was informed that the complainant had died.

However, FIA officials have complained of lack of resources and manpower to vigorously pursue such cases.

Nabila’s case was one of the 44,000 pending with the cybercrime wing of the FIA. Around 18,000 of those cases have been filed by women.

Officials said that given the enormous backlog, it was difficult to investigate all pending cases as there were very few women investigation officers.

Lahore DC becomes barrier in getting right to inheritance of women

LAHORE     –   The office of the Women Ombudsperson in Punjab has been rendered ineffective as the deputy commissioners across the province are not taking administrative actions to enable women to get their inherited properties from their close relatives.

Although most of the deputy commissioners in Punjab are not taking the directions issued from the Ombudsperson’s office seriously, the DCs of Lahore, Multan, Sargodha and Faisalabad have surpassed all others, according to the Punjab Women Ombudsperson Nabila Hakim Ali.

In this connection, Nabila Hakim has written a letter to the Chief Secretary (copy available with The Nation) complaining about the non-serious attitude of the Lahore deputy commissioner who is defying directions of her office on several cases pertaining to women who have not been given possession of their properties inherited to them.

According to the letter, the DC Lahore has committed contempt of court for not taking action under the Women Property Rights Act. Under this Act, the DC did not implement the decisions given by the court of Women’s Ombudsperson regarding women’s property. The letter has listed eight cases of this type in which the DC has not taken any action while there are more than 100 cases on which the DC Lahore has not initiated inquiry regarding women properties through the revenue officers to know whether the property is free of any judicial litigation or not. It is pertinent to mention here that the office of ombudsperson does hold the power to issue the contempt orders.

When contacted to seek his version, Lahore Deputy Commissioner M Ali did not respond to the calls and messages sent to his cell number by this scribe. The letter further reads that the performance of the DC is spoiling the reputation of the ombudsperson office. “Several reminder notices were also sent to the DC Lahore but no response was received from his office. On October 7, the DC was asked to appear in person in the court of women’s ombudsperson Punjab but he did not appear,” reads the letter. The ombudsperson in her letter requested the Punjab chief secretary to take notice of the inaction by the DC. A copy of the letter has also been sent to Punjab chief minister, law minister and all the DCs of Punjab. If the DC does not take this seriously, warrants will be issued against him, she has warned in her letter.

Speaking to The Nation, Nabila Hakim said that her office made decisions regarding the women inherited properties. “We ask the administration to give possession of properties to women who have right to inheritance after the necessary verification that such properties were free of any court litigation.” Giving background of the letter written to the chief secretary against the Lahore DC, she said: “There are 7 to 8 cases of this nature with no litigation involved. Apart from this, there are more than 100 cases pending in which women have requested us to help vacate their properties.”

No room for women’s harassment, promotion of ‘profanity brigade’: Sherry

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Sherry Rehman on Sunday said there was no room for harassment of women which should be condemned at every forum as it could not be allowed to promote profanity brigade spewing venom against people at public platforms.

Addressing the Dialogue on Growing Violence against Women in Politics as chief guest, the Minister said no civilised society allowed harassment of women.

The dialogue was organised by the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) and the 4th Pillar-Vigilant Media Watchdog.

Sherry Rehman said, “I proudly claim to belong to the party of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Bilawal Bhutto where no one can even think of harassment.”

She said President Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians and Co-Chairman Pakistan People’s Party, Asif Ali Zardari used to take strict action on exploitation against women.

The Minister said she had also written a book on ‘Womansplaining’ highlighting women struggle in our society, adding, “49 percent of Pakistan’s population consists of women and women are the worst affected by any crisis. However, Pakistan’s economy is driven by women.”

Commenting on the recent incident of jeering of the Information Minister at a coffee shop in London by some overseas Pakistanis, she said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) through its forum had carried out the funeral of ethics and moral values in the society.

“PTI is taking the country to such a path of bad culture and degraded morals from which it is very difficult to retreat,” Senator Sherry Rehman said.

The Minister further added that what happened to (Federal Minister for Information) Marriyum Aurangzeb could happen to anyone. The PTI should condemn and prevent such incidents instead of promoting them, she added.

“Women are being exploited and PTI leader is keeping lull over the matter. You are fuelling fascism in Quaid-e-Azam’s Pakistan,” the minister lambasted PTI leadership for its silence over the issue.

She queried the PTI leaders saying, “Will you adopt this kind of attitude towards the women of your opponent party? These are the fruits of Imran Khan’s speeches and narrative.”

She concluded that the PTI should filter such pollution, otherwise, the society would hold them accountable.—APP
