Man courts arrest after killing wife, niece ‘for honour’

LARKANA: A man surrendered himself before the Keti Mumtaz police on Tuesday after killing his wife and niece in Izzat Ji Wandh village, located on the outskirts of Naudero town.

Gada Hussain Sheikh told the police that his wife, Rasheeda, 26, and niece, Shabana, 17, had been abducted by three suspects five days ago. He said he shot dead both of them “for honour” upon finding them in Izzat Ji Wandh village. After registering a case against him, the police detained Shabana’s father, Deedar Sheikh (who was accompanying the victims when the women were shot dead) on suspicion of his involvement in the murder plan.

Earlier, Gada Hussain had lodged a report at the Keti Mumtaz police station stating that his wife Rasheeda and niece Shabana had been abducted by three suspects. After the women’s return home, Deedar made them believe that they would be killed in the name of honour. He persuaded them to accompany him to Bhanbhro Sheikh Village to escape death. While the three persons were on their way to the village, Gada Sheikh waylaid he women in Izzat Ji Wandh village and shot them dead. Suspecting Deedar’s complicity in the double murder plan, police took him into custody.

Meanwhile, police took the bodies to the Naudero Hospital for a post-mortem examination before handing them over to the heirs.

Main accused of Naukot gang-rape arrested

SUKKUR: The Naukot Police, after seven days of the Naukot gang rape incident with two girls, have arrested a main accused, while others, who allegedly involved, had already been arrested. Reports said the police on Monday have arrested Ali Nawaz Tunghri, the main suspect involved in the gang-rape from some undisclosed location. The police have arrested all 20 accused nominated in the FIR by the victims, saying that the investigating into the incident was carried out on modern basis though the final DNA test report of the victims had not yet provided by the LUMS, despite of a letter had already been sent to issue the report at their earliest. It is pertinent to mention that the alleged gang-rape incident with two girls in Naukot occurred some seven days ago at village 16-Miles of Nafees Nagar.

National Commission on the Status of Women launches strategic plan for women empowerment

National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) on Monday launched its three-year strategic plan with aim to establish a structure and path for the commission, dealing with thematic areas related to violence against women, political representation, and empowerment of women in the public and social sphere.

The launching ceremony was attended by various diplomats, development partners, civil society organizations, media representatives and others.

Chairperson NCSW Nilofar Bakhtiyar said women in Pakistan had a long, patient wait and NCSW now needs support to ensure voices of women are heard at the higher echelons. She said different recommendations were tabled with prime focus on NCSW’s role in generating knowledge, and women-friendly legislation. Moreover, the role of NCSW in ensuring inclusiveness of women from all spheres of life was stressed.

The chairperson reiterated the role of women in policy formulation and implementation and how increased representation would safeguard women’s interests and rights. Other recommendations included increasing representation of special-needs women, transgender and senior citizens to guarantee that their voices and concerns are represented in the formulation of laws.

The event ended with the felicitations from development partners including country Reps UN Women, European Union, UNICEF, media anchors and president Islamabad Chamber who expressed their commitments in continued support for women empowerment and inclusiveness in all walks of life.

Commitments renewed to improve state of girls education

PESHAWAR: The participants of a roundtable discussion have reiterated the commitments to improve the state of girl’s education in the province by strengthening efficient and equitable budget allocation to promote a safe and enabling environment at the educational institutions.

The Women Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in collaboration with Blue Veins, a local non-governmental organization working to promote girls’ secondary education, had organized a roundtable discussion with members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in celebration of National Women Day of Pakistan.

The event was attended by KP Assembly Deputy Speaker Mehmood Khan, Minister for Human Rights and Labour Shaukat Yousafzai, Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Revenue and Estate Taj Mohammad, other members of KP Assembly, officials from the Elementary and Secondary Education Department, Child Protection and Welfare Commission and Women Commission on the Status of Women.

“Recommendation Paper to improve Girls Secondary Education” was also launched during the consultation.It was handed over to Education Department by Shaukat Yousafzai, Taj Mohammad, MPA Ziaullah Bangash and Madiha Nisar Vice-President of the caucus.

Shaukat Yousafzai said: “Despite the progress, women and girls continue to face multiple challenges in achieving gender equality in all fields, including education.He added that the KP government is committed to addressing all socio-economic and structural barriers and undertaking positive measures to bring about gender equality.

Taj Mohammad said: “Educated girls are a powerful force for building more prosperous, fair and resilient societies based on an “invisible chain” of shared values. The Sustainable Development Goal-4 on quality education for all girls can only be achieved through a much greater collective effort to dismantle the barriers, driven by leaders from all sectors of society.”

MPA Shagufta Malik said: “The recommendation paper by the WPC is a significant document for Elementary and Secondary Education Department, identifying needed actions to ensure support for disadvantaged girls for stay and retention in school.”

Qamar Naseem of Pakistan Education Champions Network and Manager Strategic Engagement & Advocacy of the Blue Veins, said that improved coordination among policymakers, legislators and civil society presents a key opportunity to promote political leadership backed up with resources to translate commitment for improved girls education into action at scale.”

The participants of the consultation agreed that education for girls is about more than access to school. It is also about girls feeling safe in classrooms and supported in the subjects and careers they choose to pursue – including those in which they are often under-represented.

Young girl ‘gang-raped’ during robbery in Karachi

KARACHI: A young girl was allegedly raped by suspects during a house robbery in Karachi’s Surjani Town. The incident took place Sunday night. Police have registered a case and started an investigation.

Armed suspects entered a house in Sector 7A area of Surjani Town Police Station and looted the family members at gunpoint. During the incident, the suspects also allegedly raped a girl in the house.

Police officials said that the family has informed the police that the incident took place around 11pm on Sunday. The number of armed suspects involved in the incident was six. Three to four of the suspects entered the house while the two kept guard outside.

They said that when a member of the family went out to buy milk, the door was left open and upon seeing the door open, the suspects entered the house.

According to police, the armed robbers robbed away Rs24, 000 in cash and jewelry from the house and allegedly subjected a young girl to rape.

The police officials said that the girl could not be medically examined Sunday night due to the non-availability of the lady MLO. However, the victim was medically examined on Monday and the lady MLO obtained DNA samples which will be sent to the laboratory and the facts will come out after issuance of the DNA report.

According to police personnel, case crime No 232 of 2022 has been registered against the unidentified accused under Sections 392, 397, 376 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code and the investigation has been launched.

On the other hand, the SSP West also reached the house of the affected family, gathered information and assured the affected family of justice.

The police official also directed the SHO to conduct a speedy and transparent investigation into the incident and arrest the culprits.
