Police torture three women of a family

GUJRAT, February 23 2006: Three women of a family were subjected to severe torture by some officials of the A-Division police in Azizabad locality on Tuesday February 21 night.

Reports said a police team led by ASI Mustansar Husain Shah raided the house of Abdul Hakim to arrest his son, Qaiser. The police started beating women when they failed to arrest Qaiser. They beat three women so badly that one of them went into coma owing to head injuries.

The area’s people said Qaiser was involved in a case, but he was acquitted by the court following a patch-up with the complainant.

Soon after the incident, more than 1,000 people staged a protest rally and chanted slogans against the police. They marched towards the A-Division police station where they demanded registration of a case against the policemen responsible for this highhandedness.

Area nazim Tariq Sarmad and city DSP Mahmoodul Hasan reached the spot and negotiated with the protesters who dispersed peacefully following an assurance by the DSP that a strict action would be taken against the accused policemen.

‘Police let rapists off the hook’

SIALKOT, February 23 2006: Family of a gang-rape victim has alleged that Daska Saddar police have declared all the four nominated accused innocent after receiving bribe from them.

Muhammad Din, father of girl ‘A’, told the press that investigation officer SI Rehmat Ali had received bribe from the accused party and rapists were continuously threatening them with dire consequences for reporting the matter to police.

According to the FIR (419/2005), Faisal, Tanvir, Pandari and Gaari had allegedly gang-raped ‘A’ at her house at Ranjhai-Daska on Dec 16, 2005.

When contacted, DPO Tariq Khokhar said the police were ready to conduct probe from another investigation officer.

Showing mistrust on police, the girl’s father has appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi and Governor Khalid Maqbool to provide them justice.
