Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) approves rules to protect women from domestic violence

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet on Tuesday approved the KP Domestic Violence against Women (Prevention and Protection) Rules, 2022 to protect women from violence as guaranteed under the constitution. Chief Minister Mahmood Khan chaired the meeting which, besides the cabinet members, was also attended by the chief secretary and officials, said a handout.

The cabinet flayed the Pakistan Democratic Movement President Maulana Fazlur Rahman after accusing him of advocating the halt to funds for KP province and termed such statements and acts tantamount to enmity with the people of the province. The participants of the meeting deliberated upon the hardships faced by the consumers due to the closure of CNG stations in the province and the chief minister assured that he would take up the matter with the quarters concerned to provide relief to the masses.

The cabinet approved the formation of a sub-committee to be headed by the food minister and comprising of the finance minister, Local Government minister and other relevant officials as its members to fix the wheat price.

It Okayed the amendments to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Village Council and Neighbourhood Council Rules of Business 2022. According to the amendments, the remuneration of the tehsil mayors and chairmen was enhanced and 200 liters of petrol per month was fixed for them.

The proposal to declare Peshawar and Termez city of Uzbekistan as sister cities was given the nod. The cabinet authorized the mayor of the Capital Metropolitan Government of Peshawar to sign the Model Sister City Agreement with Uzbekistan in this regard.

The cabinet granted ex-post facto approval to the charges incurred on fuel, transportation and other allied matters/expenditures for carrying out relief activities and survey process in various areas of the province affected by the recent monsoon rains and floods.

An emergency was declared in various flood-affected areas of the province by the Relief, Rehabilitation and Settlement Department under Section 16 (A) (1) of the National Disaster Management (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) (Amendment) Act, 2019 upon the request(s) of the relevant district administration and recommendations of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.

The cabinet approved the establishment of session’s divisions and civil divisions in the newly-bifurcated districts of Upper South Waziristan and Lower South Waziristan. The court of sessions shall be holding sittings in Spinkai Raghazai and Wanna in Upper South Waziristan and Lower South Waziristan districts respectively.

The civil courts will hold sittings in Spinkai Raghazai and Wanna in Upper South Waziristan and Lower South Waziristan districts. The transfer of state land in Miandam, Khwazakhela tehsil and Swat district was approved for Elementary and Secondary Education Department for expansion of Government Higher Secondary School Miandam in Swat district.

Body of minor girl, killed for honour, retrieved

TOBA TEK SINGH: Rescue 1122 divers and Jhang police officials worked for three days in vain to recover the body of a girl from the Korraywali Kachi canal near Jhang.

During the investigation, Babar Ali Sial, who reportedly murdered his minor daughter for honour, told authorities that he had dumped the body into a canal. He changed his story on Tuesday and directed the police to the correct spot.

Sania, his 12-year-old daughter, was strangled and her body was dumped in an abandoned water well in his village of Kot Khaira. Later, he used a tractor to fill the well with earth.

Police excavated the well, retrieved the body and shifted it to the Jhang DHQ Hospital for an autopsy.

Sania was hidden in the house of her aunt in Jhang, fearing for her life, but her father and five relatives succeeded in kidnapping her on Dec 27.

Shortage of hostels irk working women

Working women and women with disabilities have demanded of the government to construct more public sector hostels in the federal capital to address their accommodation issues.

Talking to APP, ShahidaZain, a working woman with disability, said that the majority of working women in the federal capital have no option but to live in hostels already congested with little room and high prices. She said, “I had no other choice but to take refuge in a private hostel for which I have to pay lion’s share of my salary.

She said that apart from payment of a heavy amount, she has to face poor facilities like unhygienic environment, insufficient food and laundry issues combined with washrooms, privacy and security.” Due to the lack of public sector accommodations, the private hostels have been charging heavily and exploit the situation to the fullest.

Another working woman Zahra said that she has been searching for a public sector hostel for 3 years but she could not find one and she is compelled to live in a private room.

PBM launches ‘Orphans and Widows Support Programme’ to encourage girl education

KARACHI-Pakistan Bait ul Mal, on Monday, launched Orphans and Widows Support Program aimed at grant of monthly financial assistance to orphan girls for their education.

Phase me of the Orphans and Widows Support Programme (OWSP) was launched here at Art Council of Pakistan Karachi in a ceremony attended by Central President PPP women Wing and Member Sindh Assembly Faryal Talpur, Managing Director Pakistan Bait ul Mall Amir Fida Paracha and Senator Waqar Mehdi.

Chairperson National Assembly Standing Committee on Industries and Production Shahida Rehmani, Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, Members Sindh Assembly Sadia Javiad, Qasim Siraj Soomro, Suhail Anwer Sial and others were also present at the occasion.

Faryal Talpur, speaking at the ceremony appreciated efforts of PBM for assistance of deserving and destitute persons and said that first ever social protection initiative for orphan girls, OWSP, would encourage the women who wished to educate their girls.

55 females get training in socio-economic empowerment skills

PESHAWAR – A toolkit and certificate presentation ceremony was organised for female pass-outs from the merged District Kurram, where 55 females were schooled in the skills of cloth stitching and cooking to help them achieve socioeconomic empowerment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s rural districts.

The trainees were not only given vocational training, but they were also provided with adequate operating capital, toolkits, and entrepreneurship seminars to encourage them to pursue self-employment.

GIZ-Support for TVET Sector of Pakistan (STVSP), KP-TEVTA GIZ-global project “Program Migration for Development (PME),” and the Ministry of Overseas Pakistan & Human Resource Development, Government of Pakistan collaborated on this project.

The event was attended by the Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, Sajid Hussain Turi, PPP Senator Rubina Khalid, Deputy Head of GIZ-STVSP Dr Mansoor Zaib, Director of KP-TEVTA Munir Gul, and Principal Miss Sifwat.

Sajid Hussain Turi praised the German government for its assistance and advised the graduates to make the best use of their abilities for income-generating enterprises and the socioeconomic development of the region.

He also emphasised comparable demand-oriented skill-building programmes for the province’s disadvantaged young, with a specific emphasis on women’s engagement.
