Marriage of a minor

THIS is apropos of the news item, ‘Jirga orders marriage of four-year-old village girl’ (Aug 31). I thought these jirgas were declared illegal but apparently the government is unable to enforce its writ even in Jacobabad.

However, what is really surprising is that no one in the Federal Bureau of Revenue ever notices the wealth of the people involved.

In the instant case, the jirga imposed Rs400,000 fine on Jawed Brohi.

Mind you, these people never pay taxes, ostensibly on the grounds of poverty, yet they are able to pay huge amounts as fines.

Shouldn’t the tax mandarins visit the place and recover the much-needed taxes from these people? Or will they go on punishing those stupid citizens who pay taxes honestly?

NAB withdraws cases against PM’s wife

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has officially filed an application in the Accountability Court of Karachi to withdraw two cases filed against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s wife Fauzia Gilani, BBC reported on Thursday.

Pakistan Green Fertilisers Limited Director Fauzia Yousuf Gilani, Ziaur Rehman, Khalid Hussain, Nasreen Munawar Chaudhry and Syeda Samina Abrar allegedly get a loan of Rs 71 million from the Zarai Taraqiati Bank in 1987 and did not return the money.

They were also accused of receiving another loan of Rs 100 million from the same bank and not returning it. On Thursday, the NAB counsel filed an application with the court to withdraw the cases, stating that the parties had agreed to an out-of-court settlement.
