UC Nazims to facilitate lady councillors

KARACHI: City Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil has directed the Union Council (UC) Nazims to arrange an appropriate place in their respective towns for lady councillors so that they could hear the grievances of women in their respective areas.

She issued the directive while meeting the lady councillors at her office on Friday. These councillors said the nazims do not arrange appropriate rooms and furniture for them which renders them unable to solve the problems of the womenfolk.

They said ladies feel comfortable in discussing various issues with women councillors instead of men. Nasreen assured of all cooperation in resolving the matter.

Stringent punishment proposed for anti-women crimes

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Women Development suggested a seven to 10 years imprisonment in ‘Vani’ cases and called for making this crime a non-bailable and non-compoundable offence.

The Senate committee, which met here on Tuesday at the Parliament House with Senator Tahira Latif in the chair to discuss and review the recommendations of the subcommittee on laws of inheritance and on evil practices like ‘Vani,’ ‘Sawara’ etc which have marginalised the social status of the womenfolk of the country.

Senator Sardar Jamal Khan Leghari, convener of the subcommittee highlighted salient features of the report.The committee approved the recommendations with certain amendments after threadbare discussion.

The committee called upon the Women Development Ministry to devise ways and means through advocacy, motivation programmes and effective media campaign in favour of granting inheritance rights to women and condemning the evil of ‘Vani’ and other unjust practices.

It also suggested incorporation of material on women’s right of inheritance in the syllabus from Class-VI onwards.

The members of the committee were of the view that issues of ‘Vani’ and ‘Sawara’ were heinous crimes against women and called upon women political leaders to educate councillors on these issues to create awareness among women.

Federal Minister for Women Development Sumaira Malik assured the committee that a viable plan has been chalked out to create awareness among masses through media. She suggested that the parliamentarians should come forward and participate in the awareness campaign. She said that government was seriously considering making more laws on issues pertaining to women.

The members of the committee commended the work done by the subcommittee headed by Senator Sardar Jamal Khan Leghari and expressed view that these recommendations would pave the way for legislation aimed at the welfare of women. Chairperson of the committee Senator Tahira Latif praised the government for initiating projects for the well being of women provide them relief against unjust exploitations.

The meeting was attended by Senators Fauzia Fakhar-uz-Zaman Khan, Yasmin Shah, Sabina Rauf, Semeen Siddique and Sardar Jamal Khan Leghari. Federal Minister for Women Development Sumaira Malik, secretary ministry of women development and senior officials of the ministry were also present.

Inclusion of women’s rights sought in curriculum

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21: The Senate Standing Committee on Women Development has recommended the incorporation of material on women’s rights of inheritance into the national curricula from class VI.

The committee headed by Tahira Latif at its recent meeting in the Parliament House discussed the recommendations made by its sub-committee on laws of inheritance and evil practices such as Vani and Swara, a press note issued by the Senate Secretariat said.

Sub-committee convener Senator Sardar Jamal Khan Leghari briefed the standing committee about the recommendations.

The standing committee also recommended seven to 10 years of imprisonment in Vani cases and called for making it a non-bailable and non-compoundable offence.

The committee members called upon the ministry of women development to create through advocacy, motivation programmes and effective media campaigns, an atmosphere in favour of women’s rights to inheritance.

A bill — Prevention of Anti-Women Practices (Criminal Law Amendment) Bill, 2006 — has already been presented in the National Assembly to end social, political and religious excesses against women.

The members were of the view that Vani and Sawara were heinous crimes against women and suggested that women development ministry’s political schools, which had been set up for training to women councillors, should educate councillors about these evil practices to create further awareness among women.

The bill, if passed by the parliament, is expected to end certain practices leading to exploitation and discrimination of womenfolk like depriving them of inherited property, sale and purchase of women, marriage with the Holy Quran, tradition of Vani and matters relating to divorce.

Federal Minister for Women Development Sumaira Malik assured the committee that an effective plan would be chalked out to create awareness among general masses on women’s rights to inheritance and evil practices.

She said the government was seriously considering further legislating on issues pertaining to women.

Two killed over Karo-Kari; one dies in tribal clash

SUKKUR: Spiraling honour killings and raging tribal feuds continue to plague the peace of upper Sindh despite legislation by parliament to put an end to ages-old patriarchal customs and give the woman her due status in society.

Three people were killed and several injured in “honour”-related crimes and tribal clashes in different parts of the province during the last 24 hours.

In the first incident Haider Otho, allegedly killed his spouse, Rani, in village Char, near Daulatpur Safan, on the night between Monday and Tuesday because he suspected that she had illicit relations with another person.

The killer, later, fled the scene unchallenged and no case was registered till the filing of this report.

Separately, Muhammad Murad Essani, who had sustained critical wounds in a clash over Karo-Kari 15 days ago, succumbed to his injuries in a Larkana hospital early on Tuesday morning.

Reportedly, Muhammad Murad Essani, a resident of village Sardar Noor Ahmed Jakhrani, was seriously injured by armed men over a Karo-Kari dispute in Thull. He was hastened away to a hospital in Larkana, where he expired on Tuesday morning.

Although the Bahoo Khoso police had registered the case against three persons, Hussain Bux, Noor Hassan and Majeed Essani, but no arrest has been made so far.

In another incident a woman was killed and three others were injured when two sub-clans of the Gopang tribe clashed in village Bajhi Gopang, near Naudero, on Tuesday morning.

The two belligerent clans have been at daggers drawn over a petty issue since long. On Tuesday tribesmen from both sides opened random fire at each other, injuring four people, Rahima, w/o Karim Bux Gopang, Aslam Gopang, Azizan and her brother Liaqat. The injured were rushed to a local hospital where Azizan was pronounced dead on arrival. No case was registered till our going to press.

Seven persons were wounded in another tribal clash on the premises of the Civil Court, Pano Aqil, on Tuesday morning.

Two groups of the Channa tribe made ruthless use of clubs and batons in the clash, which left seven people injured. The wounded tribesmen were identified as Aslam, Ali Akbar, Zulfiqar Ali, Ali Asghar, Ali Hassan, Gaji Khan and Alam. The Baiji police have rounded up five persons – Aslam, Ali Akbar, Zulfiqar Ali, Ali Asghar and Ali Hassan.

Our Khairpur correspondent adds: A hibernating tribal row flared up after the lapse of five years on Tuesday, claiming one life.

One Muhabat Shaikh along with his associates allegedly descended upon the house of Manzoor Hussain in village Jam Shaikh and opened fire on the family. Resultantly, Manzoor Hussain Shaikh was killed and Muhammad Aslam Marri injured.

Reportedly, notorious criminal Barku Marri had killed two men from Muhabat Shaikh’s tribe five years ago. Tuesday’s killing is in revenge for the double murder.

Fear gripped the locality and the Gambat police set up pickets to stop further bloodshed.

Separately, a youth was killed when an electricity pole fell on him in village Phourhi Chandia. Villagers were uprooting the wrongly pitched pole from a street, when it slipped from their hands and fell on the youth, Qifayat Chandio, killing him on the spot.

Our Larkana correspondent adds: Seven armed dacoits kidnapped two brothers here on Tuesday evening.

Raja Mahesar and his brother Ghous Bux Mahesar, residents of village Phulpota, were kidnapped in the jurisdiction of Naodero police station. Witness said the dacoits took the two brothers to the Katcha area of Larkana district. Police were following the dacoits till the filling of this report.

Woman, her would-be kidnapper shot dead

TOBA TEK SINGH, Feb 21: A divorced woman and one of her would-be kidnappers were killed in an exchange of fire between the suspects and the victim’s brother at Rajana on Tuesday night.

Reports said three people reached the house of a retired police sub-inspector Chaudhry Muhammad Siddiq in Madina Colony and attempted to kidnap his daughter Talat Bano. In the meantime, her brother Sarfraz, an Elite force constable, started firing on the intruders who also opened fire.

As a result of crossfire, Talat Bano and one of the intruders died on the spot while the two accomplices suffered injuries. The injured managed to escape on foot. The police have taken the car and body of the suspect into custody.
