Opposition walks out of Senate

ISLAMABAD – The Opposition and a treasury member of ANP on Monday jointly staged a token walkout from the Senate against brutal killing of a 17-year old girl in the constituency (Khairpur) of Chief Minister Sindh, Qaim Ali Shah, in the name of honour.

ANP Vice President Haji Adeel strongly condemned the incident and joined hands with Opposition against the killing of 17-year old girl, Taslim Solangi. He said that many innocent girls have been murdered in the name of honour, but the culprits are moving freely without any fear.

“We raised these issues in the Parliament but the government did not punish any culprit of these brutal killings. The government has failed to arrest the culprits involved in previous incidents of honour killings, including the incident of burying five girls alive in Balochistan,” he said.

Women of Opposition benches strongly criticized the government on the issue. They said that many women are being killed for property across the country in the name of Korokari, Wanni or honour.

Semi Saddiqui of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) raised the issue on the floor of House and said that the government should probe the incident. “The girl was first forced by the elders of her tribe to run before hungry and furious dogs and later they shot her dead,” she lamented.

She said that the murder of a Solangi girl in the name of honour took place in the Hajnah Shah Goth area, which falls in the constituency of the Chief Minister Sindh, Qaim Ali Shah.

Bibi Yasmin Shah of PML-Q also condemned the incident and said how long women would be the victims of such inhuman acts. She said that the government should take up such cruel customs seriously.

Senator Nisar Memon said that his party would not tolerate such incident. “We should eliminate such old inhuman practices against women as soon as possible,” he said.

Leader of the House in Senate, Mian Raza Rabbani told the House that he had read of the incident a newspaper and contacted the Chief Minister Sindh who had already directed the concerned authorities for inquiry into the incident, he claimed.

He said that the Chief Minister is coming to Islamabad and would inform of the measures taken place in this regard. He said that he would inform the House of the measures taken by province government on Tuesday (today).
