Marriage row: Widow, her two daughters killed

SAHIWAL: A widow along with her two daughters was killed allegedly by her brother-in-law (husband’s brother) and nephews over a marriage dispute here on Monday night at village 189/9-L. The widow’s third daughter sustained serious injuries during the firing.

Reports said Anwari Bibi’s husband Taj Muhammad had died some 17 years ago. Taj’s six acre land was transferred to Anwari Bibi and her three daughters, but it was actually in the possession of her brother-in-law, Hashmat.

Hashmat wanted to arrange marriage of his three sons with his nieces — Asiya, Yasmin and Shazia. Anwari feared that Hashmat’s proposal was actually an attempt to grab their land.

On Monday night, seven people, including Hashmat and his three sons Allah Ditta, Umer Hayat and Fayaz, came to the house of Taj Muhammad and opened fire, killing Anwari, Asiya and Yasmin on the spot. Shazia suffered critical injuries and was shifted to Sahiwal DHQ hospital.

Talking to Dawn, Nawaz, brother of Anwari Bibi, alleged that the Harrapa police did not provide protection to the family despite the fact that they had been informed about the family dispute.

“We have earlier informed the Harrapa police about the increasing tension between the two families but no one listened to us,” said Fatima, mother of Anwari Bibi.

The police have registered a case (FIR 317/09) against Hashmat, his three sons and another person.

Rejecting the allegation, Harrapa SHO Muhammad Anwar said: “No arrest has so far been made.” Bodies were handed over to the family after autopsy.

Harrapa police had already registered a case (FIR 285/09) against its SHO Muhammad Anwar along with 30 others under sections 394, 385, 365 and 354 of the PPC on the orders of the Multan bench of the Lahore High Court. But he had not been suspended from service so far.
