LAHORE, Oct 29: A man tried to burn himself outside the Lahore Press Club on Monday in protest against abduction and attempted rape of his minor daughter and police inaction against the accused.

Shakeel Ahmed, 35, of Juggian Nagra came to the press club with his wife Rani and raised slogans against Nawankot police for not registering a case against Abbas and his accomplices, who allegedly abducted his 10-year-old daughter and tried to rape her.

Ahmed said he visited the offices of Nawankot station house officer (SHO) and supervisory police officer (SPO), but no one listened to him. Then he submitted his application to the senior superintendent of police for operations, who sent his application to the SPO and the SPO sent it to an assistant sub-inspector (ASI). He said police officials sent his application from one office to another, but they did not take action against the accused.

Later, he sprinkled kerosene oil on his body to burn himself, but police stopped him from doing so and took him to Mayo Hospital because of his poor health and wounds on his belly.

The Nawankot SPO said neither Ahmed nor Rani contacted him for action against the alleged abductors of their daughter.

He said the police had been directed to register a case against Abbas and his accomplices under Section 353 of the PPC, “in line with Ahmed’s complaint”
