KARACHI: Entry test for admissions to MBBS and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) of the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) was held here on Sunday with one-month delay at the Ojha campus of the varsity in which a majority of female candidates was witnessed.

As many as 5,000 applications were received of them 4,693 candidates were declared eligible for admissions against 700 seats (350 each at the DMC and the SMC) available for the MBBS programme and 100 seats for the BDS programme in the DUHS’s Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan Institute of Health Sciences. The entry tests for admissions in medical colleges were simultaneously held in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah and Larkana for 1,700 seats of MBBS and BDS.

There are 350 seats in Liaquat University of Medical Sciences (LUMS), 250 in Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Larkana; 200 in People’s University of Medical and Health Sciences and 100 in Lyari Medical College. National Testing Service (NTS) will declare the results on its website within 72 hours of the test while three days will be given to students for claim.

DUHS has already conducted Hifz-e-Quran test for extra marks in which 152 appeared out of 171. Rangers and police cops were deployed for security while ambulance and fire brigade were also present to avert any untoward incident. According to the reports of provincial health department, the admissions of female student in medical colleges in the province have been increasing since 2005 which indicates the danger of shortage of male doctors and can create problem to provide medical assistance to the poor people in next few years.

The reports showed that female student succeeded in open merit and entry test of Dow Medical College of Karachi, Sindh Medical College, Liaquat Medical and Health Sciences of Jamshoro, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University of Larkana and Ghulam Mehar Medical College of Sukkur during the year 2005-2010.

It showed statistics of admissions in medical colleges in 2005. In whole, 553 male students and 926 female students took admission in different medical colleges. Out of which 232 male and 197 female in Liaquat Medical and Health Sciences of Jamshoro, 59 male and 238 females in Sindh Medical College, 90 male and 212 female in Dow Medical College, 126 males and 68 females in Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University of Larkana, 46 males and 44 females in Medical Mehar Medical College of Sukkur, Whereas, 167 female student got admissions in Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (SMBBMU), Larkana. According to reports, around 568 male students and 1030 students took admission in the session of 2006-2007, while 539 male and 946 females in 2007-2008.

The reports further showed that in 2009-2010 approximately 116 male and 222 female in Liaquat Medical and Health Sciences of Jamshoro, 66 male and 246 females in Sindh Medical College, 63 male and 267 female in DOW medical college, 121 males and 125 females in Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University of Larkana, 55 females in Medical Mehar Medical College of Sukkur, while, more than 150 female student got admission in SMBBMU.
