‘Women’s empowerment must for progress’

LAHORE: No society can achieve the goal of progress and prosperity until women in that society are given their rights, said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Thursday.

Speaking at a meeting arranged by Aurat Foundation, Qureshi said the charter of PTI would guarantee women’s empowerment.

He said that NGOs working for the welfare of women are doing a wonderful job and every citizen should put their share towards this noble mission. Qureshi said that Islam covers and ensures equal rights to women “but unfortunately we in subcontinent inherited some customs which have resulted in discrimination against women”.

He said that PTI Chairman Imran Khan has a “great vision for the welfare of women in different sectors and legislation will also be reviewed in this context if the PTI comed to power”. Aurat Foundation provincial manager Mumtaz Mughal called for granting 33 percent representation to women in the assemblies, enhancing education budget for them, providing better health facilities and reviewing “discriminatory laws of hadood and honour killings”.

Mumtaz and the other participants of the meeting lauded the manifesto of PTI and expressed hope that Imran Khan would go further in taking steps for the welfare of women.
