Women rough up SHO

LAHORE: A scuffle broke out between a group of female protesters and the women police over blocking Davies Road for demonstration in front of a private television channel on Monday.

The Civil Lines police registered a case against the protesters after, what they claimed, the women slapped and thrashed the Racecourse women police station SHO for removing them from the road.

Civil Lines division SP Dr Haider Ashraf told Dawn that at least 20 women of the Mozang area gathered outside 90-The Mall, demanding loans write-off they got from the Punjab Cooperative Bank during the tenure of the previous government.

He said the staff of CM’s office assured the protesters of taking up the matter with the bank management as soon as possible.

He said the women after getting assurance dispersed for a while but then gathered on Davies Road.

Women police were called to handle the situation, the SP said, adding that the protesters were asked to register the protest beside the road to avert traffic jam.

One of the protesters slapped SHO Azra Perveen upon which a clash took place. Witnesses said some protesters and lady policemen suffered injuries. Traffic was already blocked following an anti-Musharraf rally being organised by PPP activists outside the Lahore Press Club at that time.

Police said they did not baton-charge the protesters.

Some of the policemen deployed outside the press club rushed to Davies Road. After half an hour, the protesters dispersed.

Police have registered a case against the protesters on the complaint of Ms Perveen. An investigation wing police official said no woman had been arrested so far.
