KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday ordered the release of a convict in Karo-Kari killing case after the deceased’s family reached a compromise with the accused.
Muhammad Ramzan was charged with killing Rasool Bux on suspicion of having illicit relations with Sakina, within the limits of Thul police station in 1994. In September 2006, Additional Sessions Judge-Jacobabad convicted him, awarding life imprisonment and Rs 100,000 compensation to the legal heirs of the deceased and additional six months of rigorous imprisonment on non-payment. Meanwhile, the co-accused Ghulam Nabi and Haji Pir were acquitted as they were given the benefit of doubt.
Ramzan filed an appeal in the SHC, praying for his release as the relatives of the deceased compromised after receiving Rs 200,000 as compensation. Bux’s relatives appeared before Justice Mehmood Alam Rizvi and submitted that they had pardoned Ramzan after reaching a compromise. Justice Rizvi, keeping in view the circumstances of the appeal, said that the appellant be released if he is not required in any other custody case.
SHC restrains media campaign of residential project: The SHC on Wednesday restrained the media campaign of a luxury residential project, Falaknaz Dream Villas, in Malir, Karachi.
Advocate Rasheed A Rizvi submitted that the plaintiff Al-Tameer Properties initiated a residential bungalows project on 38 acres on mortgaged land purchased by his client on a payment of Rs 60 million from a bank. The defendants M/s Shah Developers and Mehar Rafique Khandari, previous co-owners of the land, indulged in civil litigation with the plaintiffs.
The SHC single bench on June 22 ordered the parties to maintain status quo in respect of the subject land. Rizvi said that the defendants would misinterpret the stay order that would also affect current and future bookings of bungalows of the plaintiff. As many as 300 out of 345 units have already been sold.
He prayed to review the order that directed parties to maintain status quo. Justice Yasmin Abbasey, after hearing the arguments, ordered that the media campaign by the defendants with regards to publishing notices in newspapers is restrained till decision of suit property’s title.
