Suo motu in two rape cases

LAHORE, May 14: The Lahore High Court on Thursday issued a suo motu notice regarding the alleged gang-rape of a schoolgirl at the hands of four influential landlords in Mauza Talvandi, as well as the rape of another woman in Mauza Guga Sarai by Sardar Abdul Ghani.

The chief justice directed the SP and the SHO concerned to appear before the court on May 19 along with the crime record.

According to a news item, landlords Sardar Munir, Chaudhry Ashraf, Chaudhry Imran and Chaudhry Irfran raped an FA student on the premises of the Government High School and when she lost consciousness had her admitted at DHQ Hospital.

In a separate incident mentioned in the same news item, a landlord allegedly barged in the house of a newly-wed woman in Mauza Guga Sarai and raped her.

The chief justice issued another suo motu notice on Thursday regarding alleged prostitution by women police officials under the supervision of high ranking senior police officers as reported in a newspaper.

He directed the SSP (Operations) to appear before the court on May 18 so that he could know the facts of the case.

The Advocate General of Punjab has been directed to assist in both matters.

REQUEST GRANTED: The LHC while hearing a petition against imposition of daylight savings time and loadshedding granted a request to have the Secretary Cabinet Division made a respondent in the case.

Justice Mian Saqib Nisar also issued a notice to the Secretary Cabinet Division for next date of hearing, on May 22.

The petition, filed by Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi, prays for the forwarding of clocks on April 15 to be declared illegal and without any constitutional authority.

In response, the Pepco has informed the court that by advancing the clock for one hour the government is saving 200 to 250 megawatts of electricity per day.
