Sadia upsets Muqaddas

PESHAWAR: Seven seeded Sadia Gul upset defending champion Muqaddas Ashraf to make quarter-finals of the National Senior Women’s Squash Championship which started here at the PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex on Thursday.

Wapda’s Sadia, who recently represented Pakistan in the Asian Junior Team Championship in Jordan, played excellently keeping Muqaddas, also of Wapda, at bay all the time.

Sadia took the lead in the first set at 5-2, 7-2 but Muqaddas levelled the tally first at 7-7 and then made it 9-9 but failed to take grip giving Sadia the set 11-9.

In the second set, Muqaddas was leading 9-1 but in a dramatic turnaround promising Sadia proved by her class, taking eight straight points to make it 9-9 before finally claiming the set 11-9.

After taking the first two sets, Sadia declined in the third set as Muqaddas made an impressive comeback to take the set 11-4.

Sadia, however came back magnificently, winning the fourth and decisive set 11-5, and with it the match.

While Sadia after winning the match waved towards the spectators, a dejected-looking Muqaddas lost her temper, and in a bad show of discipline throw away her racket.

Qamar Zaman, president of the KP Squash Association, said the supervising referees after looking into the matter would send their report about Muqaddas’ discipline. Now it was up to the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) to take disciplinary action against her, Qamar added.
