Reconstruction of Jamia Hasfa: women moot participants threaten to come out on street

ISLAMABAD (July 10 2008): The participants of the women conference, held at Lal Masjid, have threatened to come on streets if the government failed to fulfil their demands of immediate reconstruction of Jamia Hafsa on its previous site and did not release Maulana Abdul Aziz and other detainees.

These were the unanimous views of the speakers and participants of the women conference, organised by Lal Masjid administration on the occasion of first anniversary of “Operation Silence” against Lal Masjid uprising in July last year, in which more than 100 people were killed as army and paramilitary evacuated the complex.

More than 1,000 old students of Jamia Hafsa took part in the moot, besides emotionally charged relatives of the people, who died in the operation. The relatives of the deceased were provided Chaddar as token of solidarity. The veiled former students of demolished Jamia Hafsa and women participants from different walks of life, some with babies, were chanting slogans “Jihad is our way”, “making Shariat supreme is our goal.”

The participants of the conference asked the government to stop hurting the Muslims’ sentiments and make sure immediate reconstruction of Jamia Hafsa and release of Maulana Abdul Aziz and other detainees.

If people, who had looted the national wealth were released under National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), then why not Maulana Abdul Aziz, who was struggling for the imposition of Islamic Shariat, should be released, said Nazima of Jamia Hafsa Ume Hassaan.

She said that if the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was not applicable in case of Maulana Aziz, then every looter and plunderer should be brought to the court of law.

She asked the government to reopen Jamia Faridia on its original site and reconstruct Jamia Hafsa. “If the government will not reconstruct Jamia Hafsa, we will build it on our own and I am sure that people of Pakistan will help us in this noble cause”, she said.

Ume Hassaan, wife of Maulana Abdul Aziz, expressed deep anguish over the increasing vulgarity and lawlessness in Pakistan, which was created after huge sacrifices made in the name of Islam. “Islam was religion of peace, harmony and asks for respecting womenfolk, but all traditions of dark era “Daur e Jahalia” are visible in our society as bad women are being protected and innocent girls, preaching Islam, are being burnt by phosphorous bombs”, she said.

Ume Hassaan rejected the statement of Inspector General of Punjab Police in which he alleged that she was preparing female suicide bombers. “If IGP has any proof he must show it otherwise it is highly regrettable that a person on such responsible post is making these statements”, she said.

Adding that in the past, the government claimed that foreigner militants were in Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, but after they gunned down hundreds of innocent girls and boys, they were unable to find foreigner.

“We are not terrorists. Islam does not teach terrorism America and its stooges are terrorists, we are holding this rally to tell the world we are alive in high spirits. Islam can never be wiped out. It grows more after martyrs shed their blood”, she said. The conference was also addressed by Asma Dua and Tayyaba Dua, daughters of Maulana Aziz; Humaira Rasheed Ghazi and Kainat Rasheed, wife and daughter of the late Abdul Rasheed Ghazi.

High security arrangements were made on the occasion of the conference, keeping in view Sunday’s blast in which 21 people, mostly policemen, died and more than 40 injured.

The Islamabad administration has made foolproof security arrangements for the conference, Rana Akbar Hayat told reporters. He said he met the administration of Lal Masjid, and assured them of all facilities, including potable water. The Islamabad traffic police have devised a traffic plan to facilitate the residents during the conference.
