Raping children

KARACHI: The abduction and assault of a teenage schoolgirl in Karachi is downright barbarism and beyond human imagination. It is about time we pondered upon some of the underlying causes behind the incident. Firstly, the practical ineffectiveness of the death penalty in Pakistan; had the rapists of five-year-old Sumbul been hanged publicly, this matter would not have emerged. Secondly, portrayal of women in the electronic media is such that it is giving rise to frustration in our society; when will the leading channels, advertisers, soaps, catwalk organisers, mobile phone companies, etc. stop portraying women as a sex symbol? Last but, absolutely not the least, parents and guardians do not seem to be playing their part to distance their daughters and sons from ‘viral’ immodesty and the harmful effects of co-education in our country.
