KARACHI: A pregnant young woman was allegedly tortured to death by her husband and in-laws in Lyari on Thursday.
Sumera, aged 20, was viciously beaten by her husband, Shakeel, his bother Anwar, his sister Farzana and her sister-in-law, Mamoona, over a petty dispute at their residence in Nayabad.
The victim’s terrible ordeal ended when she was pushed off a flight of stairs. Fearing that Sumera, who was four months into her first pregnancy, might have been killed in the fall, Shakeel and Anwar rushed her to the Civil hospital in a critical condition, where she passed away during treatment.
The culprits then tried to cover their tracks by taking away the body without having a post-mortem conducted. However, when Sumera’s family heard of her death they immediately informed the police of their suspicions towards her in-laws.
The Baghdadi police retrieved her body from Shakeel’s house and took it to CHK for an autopsy, where a female MLO confirmed that Sumera was brutally tortured and even her skull had been severely damaged. An FIR was consequently registered against the four absconding accused. The police initiated active efforts for their arrests and had managed to apprehend Shakeel and Anwar till the filing of this report.
