PPL confirms lady doctor’s rape in Sui

ISLAMABAD,February 02,2005: The Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) on Tuesday conceded before the Senate Committee that a lady doctor was molested in Sui hospital.

PPL Managing-Director SM Raza gave a detailed presentation on the situation in Sui to the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources held under the chairmanship of Senator Syed Dilawar Abbas. Members of the committee also staged a walkout from the meeting over non-satisfactory answers to the queries regarding security measures.

Though the press was not allowed to cover the meeting but later PPPP Senator Rukhsana Zuberi, who was member of the committee, confirmed to The News that the committee members staged a walkout over non-satisfactory answers of PPL officials and their refusal to disclose names of the four officials of Defence Security Guards.

She said members boycotted the committee proceedings for over one and a half hours. They ended their boycott, following the assurance that the committee report would be presented before the Senate today. “A sub-committee has been formed to furnish the report to the Senate on the whole incident and PPL’s role in twisting the facts,” she added.

The sub-committee is headed by Senator Syed Dilawar Abbas, while Rukhsana Zuberi and Dr Ismail Buledi are its members. Zuberi said during the meeting the PPL official admitted that it was established that rape did happened. “It is due to negligence on the part of the PPL that the rape victim has still not been recovered and nobody from the PPL visited her despite the fact that the victim is in Karachi,” she added.

She said the PPL official tried to repeat the statement before the committee that the lady doctor did not complain of the rape but reported of robbery. She said the PPL even failed to make any internal report of the incident, as it was a big institution and should have an in-house mechanism for probing such kind of incidents.

The meeting was attended besides chairman of the committee Senator Syed Dilawar Abbas by Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources Mir Muhammad Nasir Mengal, Senator Mrs Rukhsana Zuberi, Mohim Khan Baloch, Muhammad Sarwar Khan Kakar, Dr Muhammad Ismail Buledi and Amanullah Kanrani.

Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Ahmad Waqar and other senior officers of the ministry, PPL and OGDC were also present.
