People catch kidnappers of woman in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: In the first incident of mob justice in Peshawar, dozens of residents of the Katcha Garhi camp on Thursday tortured alleged kidnappers and set on fire their vehicles after reports that they had abducted a young woman from the locality.

The mob made the three alleged attackers hostage for hours before handing them over to the police. The vehicles that were set on fire included a car and a pick-up. A police official, however, said that one of the nabbed persons wanted to tie the knot with the girl and it was not a kidnapping case. The accused were said to be father and his two sons belonging to Mohmand Agency, presently residing in an Arbab Road locality.

“A Jirga has started negotiations to settle the issue between the two parties,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Shahid Khan told this scribe. No first information report was lodged till the filing of this report.

The residents of the provincial capital are angry at the relentless kidnappings for ransom continuing for the past few months. Apart from a few senior police officers, the entire police force has failed to arrest the crime that has broken all the past records. The provincial government has time and again claimed of taking measures for improving the situation but to no avail.

For the past many weeks, four to seven people are being kidnapped daily from Peshawar and Jamrud and win release only after payment of huge amount of money as ransom. The kidnapping of a female from Warsak Road last week added to the public anger. The woman is yet to be recovered.

Another woman was kidnapped from Hayatabad a few months ago and returned home after paying a huge ransom. As the public has lost hope of any effective steps by the coalition government and the police force, the people have now decided to protect themselves and take action against the kidnappers on their own. The Katcha Garhi incident was the first wherein the public reacted strongly after rumors about the abduction of a young girl from the area. This self-styled public justice is feared to continue in the future, as people believe there is no other way to discourage the criminals.
