The International Women’s Day is the story of ordinary women participating in the development of society on an equal footing alongside men, said Dr Ruth Pfau of Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre on Friday.
She said having set women’s empowerment and gender equality as targets to be achieved, the day being commemorated on Saturday (today) gives the international community as a whole an opportunity to review actions and assess the efforts made and those still to be achieved to advance the status of women worldwide.
Indeed, beyond the need to increase the involvement of women in the political governance, it is fundamental to create more economic opportunities for them and to strengthen their social and legal protection. She opined that our nation’s development requires women’s active participation.
