Karachi – Different non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on Friday discussed at length the women-related laws in Pakistan in order to reach a consensus on the necessary amendments in them so that they could be sent to the parliament for legislation.

The meeting was held under the auspices of the Aurat Foundation’s Legislative Watch Programme. Amongst others the meeting was attended by representatives of the Women Action Forum, ActionAid, War Against Rape and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. MPAs hailing from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League (N) also participated in the meeting.

After discussing the women-related laws including West Pakistan Family Court Act, West Pakistan Family Court Law and Child Marriage Restraint, a draft document suggesting amendments in these laws was circulated amongst the participants.

Earlier on Thursday, representatives of the Aurat Foundation called on the top judges and lawyers to enlighten them about the activities of the Aurat Foundation’s Legislative Watch Programme and to get their input. Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Shehla Raza, also addressed the Friday meeting.
