Murderers of eight-year-old girl arrested

By Adnan Lodhi

LAHORE: After an eight-year-old girl was abducted, raped, and killed on Saturday, police have successfully arrested the culprits of the crime, but has refused to disclose their names.

The girl was identified as Maham. Father of the girl, Pervaiz, disclosed the names of the culprits, saying three brothers, including Usman, Lukman, Shan, and Mumtaz had abducted her daughter from his residence on Saturday. He said the accused had used the help of three others, whom the police had arrested but their names had not yet been disclosed. He said the four brothers resided in the same house as he did on rent. He said they were originally from Okara and were currently employed at a factory. He said late Maham was a student of grade one.

A relative of the girl, seeking anonymity, said she had been missing since Saturday night and the whole family had been looking for her. He said some people found Maham’s body at Chand Maari Ground in the Green Town area on Sunday and informed the police.

Arrest: Green Town police official Muhammad Yaseen said the police had arrested the culprits and were probing the case. He said they could not disclose the names until the investigation was over. Green Town Investigation Officer Muhammad Arshad also refused to disclose the names of those arrested.

Encounter: However, another investigation team member, seeking anonymity, said the culprits were the same as disclosed by Pervaiz. He said the police might kill the culprits in a fake ‘encounter’. Green Town Deputy Superintendent of Police Maher Mumtaz confirmed the arrest of the culprits but refused to disclose their names. He said the post mortem had proved that Maham had been raped before being murdered. On Monday, a large number of people gathered at Pervaiz’s residence to protest against the culprits, and demanded an ‘encounter’ against them.
