Man who tried to sideline wife booked

KHANEWAL, May 1: A man thrashed and later tried to kill his wife with a poisonous injection allegedly after she refused to allow him to contract second marriage in Tahir Colony locality in Makhdoompur Pahaoran police precincts around two weeks ago and the police have registered a case against him on Wednesday.

The timely intervention of the woman’s family saved her life as they took her to another doctor who took immediate remedial steps. The police, however, registered a case under penal provisions involving hurt offences.

Nargis Parveen, a lady health worker, lodged complaint against her husband Muhammad Sadiq, stating that he was pressing her for quite some time to allow him wed another girl, but she refused.

On April 15, Nargis said, frustrated Sadiq and his two armed accomplices, Mushtaq and Javaid, entered her house and started thrashing her.

Later, she said, the assailants took her to a quack, who gave her an injection, which was later revealed to be of poisonous substance, apparently to kill her and clear Sadiq’s way to have another wife of his choice.

In the meantime, the complainant said, her brothers and father arrived there who took her to another doctor, who revealed that she had been given poison.

Nargis also complained that the assailants also took her children with them beside snatching her cellular phone worth Rs17,000.

She demanded that her husband should immediately be arrested because he was allegedly trying to flee to a foreign country.

She also appealed to the prime minister and the Punjab chief minister to provide her justice. The police have registered FIR No 65/2008 under Section 337-F of the Pakistan Penal Code alone. Duty officer Amjad told Dawn that they had registered the case on the basis of medico-legal report, which tentatively suggested that the woman had been tortured.

He said that offence of life attempt could be added on a subsequent stage if further investigations established that she had also been given poisonous injection.
