PESHAWAR: A man killed a woman and subsequently shot himself in Hayatabad, Phase I on Wednesday after her family turned down his marriage proposal.

According to the police, 19-year-old Mehmood Zaib, a resident of Patang Chowk, Ring Road, entered the house of Khan Nazir, pulled out a pistol and gunned down his daughter 18-year-old Husna who worked at a factory. He then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.

A complaint was registered by Fatima Zohra, the mother of the 18-year-old.

“[Mehmood] wanted to marry Husna and proposed to her,” an official of Hayatabad police station told The Express Tribune. “But the girl’s parents rejected the proposal after which the 19-year-old man took the extreme step of killing both the woman and himself.” He said the police are investigating the matter.

Last week, a woman was gunned down for refusing a marraige proposal near the Abbas Khattak area in Lakki Marwat.

A police official said three men identified as Azizullah, Noor Alam and Noor Ali stormed in Gul Muhammad’s house late Thursday night with the purpose of kidnapping his daughter but Gul saved her.

However, the official added, the three made another attempt and opened fire on her while leaving the house. The accused then fled the site.

The woman was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but she succumbed to her injuries there.

Gul told the police, one of the three men had proposed to his daughter but she rejected because of which they killed her. Police lodged an FIR and started investigation.
