ISLAMABAD: President of SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry Tariq Sayeed said promotion of women entrepreneurship was indispensable for the economic development of the country and ever-increasing share of women entrepreneurs in the global and regional trade was symbolic of their entrepreneurial skill.

He stated this at a seminar on “Global Opportunities-A Boon for Women Entrepreneurs” Organised by SAARC Chamber Women Entrepreneurs Committee at New Delhi here on Wednesday, said a press statement issued here by SAARC Secretariat.

Appreciating the role of women entrepreneurs in the economic development of the respective countries and region, he hoped that women entrepreneurs were second to none in the World.

He regarded them as real driving force behind the promotion of intra-SAARC Trade and urged upon the respective governments of the SAARC member states to facilitate women entrepreneurs so that they could effectively participate in the journey of economic development.

President SCCI said that two significant business developments have been taking place in the global economy of the 21st century. One was the explosion of women-owned businesses and the second, international trade. Putting these two together we have a powerful force with which to reckon-a force that contributes to economic growth, development, and prosperity in our world.

Although the timing has never been better for businesswomen to get out of their own backyards and transition from local, regional or niche-market-players into global market players, still the potential for Women entrepreneurship is infinite. Today, women are starting businesses at twice the rate of men and becoming major forces, both in the traditional and the new global e-business marketplace, he added.

Referring to a study conducted by Women’s Council Interagency Committee on Women’s Business Enterprise USA in 2006, he said that the significant role women have played in recent economic prosperity. He affirmed the fact that “countries with high levels of economic activity and with the highest start-up business rates are the ones where women are well-engaged in entrepreneurial activity and small businesses owned by women were focusing more intense efforts on exporting than are small businesses owned by men. He hoped that women entrepreneurs of SAARC region would proactively promote intra-regional trade within SAARC and help bringing all nations closer together.
