Honour-killing of women on increase

DADU: Speakers at a seminar held in Mehar on Thursday claimed that number of women killed on the pretext of karo-kari had increased in remote areas of Sindh because of illiteracy.

It was a common practice to hold underage marriages, which caused deaof women during delivery, they said.

The seminar was organised by Goth Sudhar Sangat on marriages of under aged girls and torture against children in Mehar town.

A social worker Amir Haider Babar said that 3,000 women were killed on the pretext of karo-kari, 950 were raped, 128 were gang-raped, 4,000 were kidnapped and 654 were tortured at police stations across Sindh over the last eight years.

Goth Sudhar Sangat President Aslam Lakhair said that the government and society were not giving equal rights to women and without giving women equal rights, society can not develop.

Writer Anwar Azad Kandhro said that feudal lords were involved in killing of women. Because of negligence of officials, number of deaths was on the rise, he said.
