Higher secondary certificate exam results show women on top

Women outshone boys in all fields of HSC examinations conducted in nine districts of Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: Female students excelled over the male students in all groups of Higher Secondary Certificate Part II (Class XII) examinations conducted by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) in Hyderabad.

As many as 31,283 students from nine districts including Hyderabad, Matiari, Jamshoro, Dadu, Badin, Thatta, Tando Allahyar, Nawabshah and Tando Muhammad Khan sat for the exams conducted in pre-medical, pre-engineering and science general groups.

Although the BISE result, which was announced on Saturday, has separate male and female position holders the latter outshined the former in terms of percentages.

In the pre-medical group, 14,238 students passed the exams out of the 16,254 who appeared for it. The board withheld 143 results while 1,873 students failed to qualify.

Similarly, 14,347 students took the pre-engineering exams with 11,227 getting through including 86.78 percent girls and 78.25 percent boys. The result of 249 students was withheld and 2,871 students failed.

The science general group had only 691 students who appearing in the examinations out of which 51.95 percent scraped through. No student could obtain an A-1 grade and just 17 students were able to get an A grade. The result of 4 students was withheld.

Top positions

The students of Hyderabad district bagged the top three spots in the pre-medical group and Superior College of Science (SCS) eclipsed all other colleges as it had five position holders.

Sumaiya Sajid from SCS was awarded the first position with 971 marks while Hira Asif of the same college clinched second place with 965 marks. SCS’s Ayesha Ahsan shared third position with Fatima Nasir from Girls College of Excellence and Amna Raees Kamal from Foundation Public Higher Secondary School. All of them acquired 950 marks.

Among the boys in the pre-medical group, Preston Intermediate College’s Muzamil Hyder attained the top position with 954 marks. SCS’s Muhammad Fahad and Syed Bilal Ali secured the second and third positions with 942 and 938 marks, respectively. In the pre-engineering group, SCS’s female students grabbed all three top positions. After obtaining 957 marks Kanwal Dev took the first place followed by Rabia Jaffari and Saba Feroze who secured 932 and 919 marks, respectively.

Nawabshah was the only district apart from Hyderabad whose students were able to compete for the top ranks. Muzaffar Hussain and Faisal Zardari of Government College Nawabshah secured the first and third positions scoring 939 and 932 marks, respectively. The second position was shared between Muhammad Usama Shaikh and Masroor Ahmed from Hyderabad’s Government City College, with 937 marks.

Hyderabad’s Shah Latif Girls College’s Areeba Irfan, Aamira and Fiza Abid secured the top positions in Science General Group securing 835, 812 and 802 marks, respectively. Between the boys, Shazaib Shaikh of Government Degree College, Hyderabad, secured 779 marks and was awarded the first position while Rafail Ahmed of Government City College, Hyderabad, and Abdul Malik of Government Boys College Qasimabad, Hyderabad, secured the second and third positions.

Ceremony

Addressing a ceremony which was held in connection with the announcement of the results, the BISE chairman, Abdul Aleem Khanzada, congratulated the students who excelled in the exams. The position holders were ecstatic about their success, however they still expressed their concerns about the curriculum and the examination system. “We feel the increasing need to recast the entire curriculum and also the manner through which knowledge is imparted,” said a position holder from the pre-medical group, Sumaiya. Muzamil Hyder from the same group highlighted the importance of simplifying the subjects and replacing outmoded knowledge.
